Heard a report from a Howard Stern staffer today, living in Manhattan. It is broken down. He saw a woman mugged on the street today. No police presence anywhere. If T was around or Gwink maybe we can here about it? Icky, any idea of the truthfulness? This can't last much longer.

In my area, some burglaries at closed restaurants got play on the evening news, but the news neglected to mention that crime has been down during the shelter in place. YMMV.

Closed restaurants? If you can't walk down the street in Manhattan because the police are gone, how you gonna go?

I can barely walk 2/3 blocks without seeing a police car. And cops are stationed on various street corners and locations. I cannot speak for NYC, except to suggest that getting your news from a Howard Stern staffer based upon one incident seems dubious.

I asked T and Gwinc for deets.
My main police fear is i'll get arrested on walks and runs for public peeing shitting as all public restrooms are closed and the po po is still out. Though I have to say not so much in sight in Detroit proper, where they need to be in sight.

Re: Stop burning the house to smoke out the mouse.
So...
As someone who used to keep a pack of American Spirits hidden in the garage, and a long time consumer of acid-reflux drugs, am I possibly Covid-proof?
I’ve been looking for an excuse to have a smoke after dinner for years, but the wife says it’s a terrible example for a kid. And I can switch down from proton pump inhibitors to Pepcid.

I was in Manhattan around noon yesterday and I saw an average of one cop car per block so I call bullshit. I call bullshit on the whole Mamet rat story too.
ETA, I have been going there once every two weeks or so. Yesterday Manhattan was more populated than it was the prior two times.

Don't know about GERD but did read this:
https://www.medpagetoday.com/infecti.../covid19/86144
One possible explanation is that smoking results in increased production of nitric oxide within the nasal passages, which have the important role of cleaning and filtering the air prior to it being pulled down to the lungs. This first pass exposure to nitric oxide in the nose may be key to preventing infection. This gas has been shown to block the ability of SARS-CoV-2 from entering cells as well as impair the ability of the virus to replicate once inside the cell. On the other hand, if the infection ensues, the systemic effect of smoking breaks down the body's ability to defend itself. The same inflammation that potentially protects against initial infection suddenly becomes the body's Achilles heel.

Catching up a bit here, but this is really reassuring! Thank you!

There's quite a bit of historical evidence that people staying home - during weather events (or just cold) and even things like when there are popular video games released - crime goes measurably down. I'd start with things actually being quite a bit safer right now being the default assumption. What a Stern staffer said is far from enough to overcome that presumption for me, but ymmv. Also, I'm going to go out on a (pretty sturdy) limb and guess that the staffer is white, given that the presence of police makes him feel safer.
That said, they two or so times I've been downtown in the last month and a half have felt weird because people experiencing homeless seemed to be almost the only people around. They're always around, of course, but there's usually others around too.

My expectations are framed by the movie Contagion, and what happened there after lock down.

So the takeaway is that Whippits are going to save us?

For a moment there my heart fluttered with immense joy. Then I recalled, they’re nitrous rather than nitric.
How awesome would it be if those were a cure? I could tune out during calls, and reply in that deep nitrous voice... “Sorrrry... therrrapyyyyy... preee-vennn-tuh-tivvvvv...”
