I recommend the book on Saturday Night Live, Live From New York, by Tom Shales and the other guy. It's basically an oral history of the show, and about 97% of it is quotations from interviews with the cast, crew and hosts. A big book, but it reads fast, and there are some wonderful moments in it.

Does the Milton Berle section include the joke/legend/urban myth? that ends with the line "c'mon Milton, just show him enough to win?"

If the fact that she's a girl is a bad thing because it distracts the players, then he's really insulting his players more than her because it makes them sound like idiots. If the fact that she's a girl is just bad, period, then he's just being an idiot.

I think you give him too much credit. He probably figured it was clear that since she was a girl, she would suck. But then he thought better of it and decided to make it clear she sucked. He doesn't seem that bright. That thought process makes sense if she wanted to be a middle linebacker, not a kicker.

Uh...one made kick (and I don't know where it was from) from a backup kicker when the game is already in hand or totally out of hand (I don't think it mattered if she hit it or not) doesn't exactly take you out of the "sucks" category.

true. but for her to put up with what she put up with at Colorado, leave,and then go to another school and try out for the football team, does make her one tough girl.

Who's questioning that? I think she's brave as hell for sticking it out for as long as she did with Colorado. But what does the Rudy factor have to do with her skill?

Agreed. I guess my point was that it weakens his argument somewhat that she went on to play elsewhere and actually scored some points - the theory being that if she was truly awful, she would not have been able to play anywhere else, let alone score.

I'm getting bored with this, but can't help it. I understand what you are saying and it is probably true. But I don't see how that helps Barnett. My point was that it is demonstrable that she wasn't totally and completely "awful". If he relies on the fact that using her was a publicity stunt in Colorado/New mexico, it makes football programs look not credible. I don't think undermining the credibility of football programs helps him. It maybe helps him that he proves she is awful, but it makes him look like an idiot. Why didn't he cut her right away?

And I doubt he was thinking any of this. My point was just that he said some stupid things.

Does division 1 level college football actually have difficulty selling tickets? The games I've been too, even for some really crappy schools, have always sold out in the division 1 level. I went to a division 3 school, so our football team was lucky when six or seven of us showed up. They were so grateful we were there that they never charged. Every single basketball game, though, was packed.

It looks even worse when put in context of the rest of his statement.

"It's a guy's sport, and they felt like Katie was forced on them," Barnett said. "It was obvious Katie was not very good. She was awful."
