Parson Malthus is all well and good, but try to work David Ricardo into a post about the car licensing fee.
I think everyone kinda hoped that Arnold had a substantive plan to fix things, and would use his popularlity and star power to get it done. Now that we see that his plan is to borrow more, decline to identify spending cuts, cut revenues farther, and shop for a home in the Bay Area instead of Sacramento, we're a little underwhelmed. On the plus side, a little more of this and we won't have to hear about Orrin Hatch's plan to amend the constitution so that you have to have been born in the United States or Austria to be President.

Easy. Can't you guys give him a few days to pull his shit together? He's been in office a total of what, 72 hours. Please.
And I think Mark Twaine would have something to say about AS' demise.

Did you read the column I posted? I would happily give him more time to pull his shit together -- the problem is what he's doing.

I did. It said he's cutting the vehicle fee, doing a bond offering, and meeting with a bipartisan group of legislatures. What that bond offering is going to look like, who knows and it is far to early to criticize until we know details.

Cutting the vehicle: costs $4 billion
Bond offering: borrow $15 billion
Identified cost-cutting so far: $175,000 (his salary)
He didn't meet the bipartisan group. One of his staffers did. And he's calling the legislature back and telling them to find places to cut. In other words, he's going to take credit for the vehicle fee, and pass the buck to them to find the savings he promised. So much for that campaign crap about auditing the books and finding the savings, eh?
As a fellow McClintock voter, I ask you: Why do you have any patience for this? Is there a single hopeful sign in that column? Any suggestion that Arnold is going to actually try to solve the state's problems?

Let us know when you think it's an appropriate time to criticize an elected GOP politician. We'll wait for him to settle in and get the lay of the land. After all, he hasn't had his comprehensive audit yet, so surely he wouldn't do anything too drastic. We'll defer comment on anything he does in the meantime, like pushing the structural deficit up by $4 billion.
Anxiously awaiting your reply,
A.

The deadline for putting the bond on the March ballot is in two weeks. I suppose I can wait that long before I start criticizing.

But what is the bond offering going to look like? Is a portion of the debt going to be used take out currently outstanding debt with a higher interest rate, thus resulting in long term savings overall? I don't know but neither do you. And I hadn't heard he's scrapping the audit. When did that come out? And why not ask the legislature to look for cuts? For all I know, it could be part of a negotiating strategy. He's been in office 3 days.
You guys consistently fall into this trap of jumping the gun . . . the economy sucks, Bush should go. Ooops, wait, 7% growth. Did I say the enconomy sucks? I meant its a jobless recovery. (Memo to the Left. Within 6 months, it will no longer be a jobless recovery, so you should start backtracking now).
All that being said, I didn't vote for AS, but I am willing to give him more than 3 days before hanging him.

If this is the sort of thing Bratton is up to, maybe I'm less impressed.

Matier & Ross call it "Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's call for a $15 billion bond to retire the state's debt." Sounds like taking on long-term debt to take care of short-term debt to me.
Why not ask the legislature to look for cuts? Gray Davis could do that.

You're not answering Atticus's question. And I'm sure the re-emergence of jobs next year will be a warm comfort indeed to those who have been without one.
When things were going well during the war, were you saying, just wait -- things'll get worse!

Two things. From the article:
>>Minutes later, a sheriff's car screeched onto the pavement behind me. Hunting down some notorious LA criminal, I thought. No doubt they wanted to know whether I had seen anyone suspicious.<<
Bratton is in charge of the LAPD (emphasis on th P), as compared to the LA Sheriffs Department. I think.
Second, if you had ever lived in a normal place (he he), you'd know that only clowns hassly people for jaywalking. And I've never heard of that happening except for Arizona and California.
Don't get me wrong, if I saw anybody almost get killed by a car while jaywalking, I'd probably yell at them (or else I'd be doing the paper). But arrest them? Ticket them? That's your brave new world out west, and I've heard these stories long before Bratton got there. And, of course, he ain't the Sheriff either. He's the Chief (kissing right bicep)(kissing left bicep)(raising both arms in victory).
So please resume the awed gape. You should be ashamed of yourself for doubting the man.
Hello

Again, we all need more details before we criticize. Finance is never as simple as that. You should know better, given our prior conversations relating to economics.

Could as in "capable." Yes. Did he? No. So it's already an improvement.

You can all start criticizing on May 16. Who knows, I may be joining you. I will say again, I did not vote for him.

I don't believe things have gotten worse or that the outcome looks more dim. I never believed this was going to be quick and easy. My estimate is a 5 year time frame before things are truly stable, though that is a conservative estimate.

Um, you might want to pick another example.

Did he just dump the problem on the Legislature? Why, yes, I think he did. It's what got him recalled. So I think Arnold wouldn't want to go there.

Atticus is marking his calendar, but you might forgive the comrade for starting 15 days earlier.

If they're out of work and voting for George, I guess they deserve what they get.

Conservative indeed if we're sticking our kids with the bill.
