Not that I'm scarred, or anything.

What book do you recommend grilling them on?
(SS, please note term grilling being applied above to children and make requisite joke).

Poll: Must-Have Rap/Hip-Hop Albums
I'm thinking of expanding the depth of my collection of rap and/or hip-hop, to the extent there's a difference.
Albums I admit to owning: - De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising
- De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead
- De La Soul - Buhloone Mind State
- A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
- A Tribe Called Quest - Anthology
- Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
- Us3 - Hand on the Torch (haven't listened since 1993)
Albums I don't yet own but agree everyone should: - Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
- N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
- Dr. Dre - The Chronic
What are the must-haves? Which Eminem, if any? Which Tupac? Which Cypress Hill, if any? Does it matter that I'm interested in the musicality of rap, and so a straight-up beat plus hardcore street lyrics isn't particularly interesting to me? (I tend to like jazz and soul horn samples.) I'm pretty bored by Old School stuff, and I am not at all interested in compiling a complete history or anything.
PLF, mold me in your divine image.

If grilling has to occur, I think grilling on an age-appropriate book is more, uh, constructive.
Edited to note that I am not advocating book-burning, but if books are used for fuel in cooking children, why not use age-appropriate books? With some mesquite thrown in for flavor.

I'd say the new Outkast double album, as well as "Stankonia." The Miseducation of Lauren Hill would be a good choice for your tastes too. Dr. Dre 2001 is just as essential as "The Chronic," but the musicality of it comes from the beats (but they're amazing beats). If you're going to get an Eminem album, get the first one, the one that has "My name is," but they'd be pretty far down on my list.

"All Hail the Queen" and the latest Missy Elliot. And I'd throw in some Salt-n-Pepa as well.

It's been mostly down (Sugar) hill since Grandmaster Flash and the Fabulous Five did The Message. But you should get The Message.

Given your interests, you must add:
- Blackalicious, Blazing Arrow and Nia
- Guru, Jazzmatazz
- The Pharcyde, Bizarre Ride (yes, it's old, but excellent)
- Deltron, Deltron 3030 (Del & Dan the Automator)
- Tribe, People's Instinctive Travels
- Handsome Boy Modeling School, So, How's Your Girl (Dan the Automator & Prince Paul)
Edited to add, I second Str8's inclusion of OutKast. As for G3, shut the hell up.

Thanks for the reminder!
Leagl, can we create the all Paigow, all the time board, so she can read things that interest her (i.e., things she writes)?

You are right. I was judging you based on your last name. Grinch could be a black person's name. Because black people have married many white Grinches and now its mainstream in black kulcha to be surnamed Grinch.
