So you don't want to talk about children's books?
I really enjoyed that discussion.

Odd, I never thought a fearful thought about gay rape from seeing Deliverance, American Me, Animal Factory, or Shawshank Redemption.

That can't be right. Transferring the pain would eliminate the psychological benefits of the treatment.

Its people like me that force companies to innovate. No. Wait. Its people like me that force DirectTV to innovate. Its the rest of you sticky-fingered muthas that force everyone else to innovate.
Hello

You asked what laws you are violating. Several in fact. Start with the DMCA and move on to the federal communications act.
You would be guilty of unauthorized reception of satellite signals, unauthorized interception of electronic communications, posesssion of a piracy device and use of that device.
Prosecutors generally don't go after the end users, so directv is doing that in a civil court. The costs can get high and they have won attorney's fees as recently as last month.
Now varying by judge sometimes you won't be found liable unless directv can prove you actually used the technology to access a signal for which you hadn't paid. Which would include accessing more services than those for which you had paid.
In pretty much every court, if directv catches you and can show you used the technology for the reason you are using it, you would be found liable.
The people who are selling the devices are being sent to prison quite handily.
As far as your innovation argument. Sure, they are forced to innovate because of the piracy. But is that innovation really in a useful direction? Wouldn't it be more useful if they were innovating by creating cheaper technology, which could in turn lower prices? Better technology that gives even better signals less likely to stop working in the rain? Personally, I'd rather see that kind of innovation.
Listen I don't condemn you for doing it. My past use of mp3s would make that hypocritical of me. I will tell you however I don't keep illegally downloaded mp3s any more. Why the change of heart? I guess I just decided it wasn't appropriate for someone in my profession. It is pretty hard to sit here demanding my rights when I am violating other people's (or company's.)
That's a decision for you to make one way or the other. But please, you're a smart guy, don't sit there and make arguments it isn't stealing.

Wacko Jacko Update
Court TV reporter Diane Dimond dropped a bombshell on Larry King's show tonight, citing high law enforcement sources for her report that authorities searching Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch brought with them not only a search warrant but an ARREST warrant for Jackson on a CA state charge of child molestation. Had he been there he would have been arrested and taken into custody on sight.
The local authorities (still on site) are calling a press conference for tomorrow morning. No word on whether they will go to NV to get Jackson or let him come back and surrender.

I don't do those, but I do use the trademarks of companies not on my client list generically; like your earlier post about masturbation (or crying?), I would have said kleenex, not tissue.

I bet every sap on this Board is guilty at least 6 times a day of not properly calling the generic brand of youknowwhat an "expanding pocket folder"

As to the first, I have to take your word for it that they apply. On the face of the language you use, I'd argue that the device I bought naturally "receives" the signals, and naturally "intercepts" the signals. Heck, if they would just quit sending it through my window and all. Wouldn't the real problem be the "decryption" of the intercepted signal? Furthermore, the possession of the device would be by virtue of the "victim's" sale of the device to me. Ditto use.
Anyway, I'm just arguing for the sake of arguing here. That "appropriate... profession" thing is the same type of reasoning I came up with for not using drugs since I turned 18, so I'm certainly not arguing against the logic.
But, if I was admitting that there is anything wrong here (in the sense of "stealing"), I'd argue the "nexus" of wrongdoing is the copying/reprinting of the filter codes on the card. Perhaps derivatively the continued use of the copied filter codes too. Neither here nor there though. I'm taking your word for it that the use is covered by valid criminal laws. Not what I practice. So I'll not mention anymore what illegal acts I used to do.
I'm gonna have to read that DMCA one of these days, seeing as how its sitting in a book on one of my shelves as it is.
Anyway, sorry to trouble you. I meant to trouble Atticus.
