Jesus god christ, you AND Atticus, just shut it. You are giving me a headache. You all probably say bigoted things about ignorant savages in the vastness that is "flyover land" and that's no different than this chickie saying she'd expect something like this to happen more where people don't all know each other.

Solstice

So what is everyone doing tomorrow to celebrate the solstice? Or is the solstice tonight?

ETA Atticus and G3 need not answer, as they ought to be busy shutting it.

Am thinking of buying this KitchenAid ice-cream maker attachment:

Anyone know if it works OK?

I celebrated a few days early. Since you asked, a poem:

The Shortest Day
Susan Cooper

| And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
| And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
| Came people singing, dancing,
| To drive the dark away.
| They lighted candles in the winter trees;
| They hung their homes with evergreen;
| They burned beseeching fires all night long
| To keep the year alive.
| and when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
| They shouted, revelling.
| Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
| Echoing, behind us--listen!
| All the long echoes sing the same delight,
| This shortest day,
| As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
| They carol, feast, give thanks,
| And dearly love their friends,
| and hope for peace.
| And so do we, here, now,
| This year and every year.
| Welcome Yule!

Tomorrow night.

I'm drinking. I'll order mulled wine or cider or something suitably pagan to celebrate. The bar I'm going to serves ouzotinis. Do you think that's pagan enough?

There's an awful rumor that "freezing precipitation" (whatever the fuck that is) is supposed to fall on us on Thursday. Clearly the world is coming to an end soon.

Speaking of the Solstice, that reminds me -- the local hippie college radio station just played the following song. Yesterday they played Lester's favorite Christmas tune, "A Fairytale of New York." Now I just need to hear "Merry Christmas From the Family" by Robert Earl Keen, and I'll be set.

The Christians and the Pagans (Dar Williams):

Amber called her uncle,
said "We're up here for the holiday.
Jane and I were having Solstice,
now we need a place to stay."
And her Christ-loving uncle
watched his wife hang Mary on a tree.
He watched his son hang candy canes
all made with red dye number three.
He told his niece, "Its Christmas Eve,
I know our life is not your style."
She said, "Christmas is like Solstice,
and we miss you and its been awhile."

So the Christians and the Pagans
sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground
the best that they were able,
And just before the meal was served,
hands were held and prayers were said,
Sending hope for peace on earth
to all their gods and goddesses.

The food was great,
the tree plugged in,
the meal had gone without a hitch.
Til Timmy turned to Amber
and said, "Is it true that you're a witch?"
His mom jumped up and said,
"The pies are burning,"
and she hit the kitchen.
And it was Jane who spoke,
and said, "Its true, your cousin's not a Christian."
"But we love trees, we love the snow,
the friends we have, the world we share.
And you find magic from your God,
and we find magic everywhere."

So the Christians and the Pagans
sat together at the table.
Finding faith and common ground
the best that they were able.
And where does magic come from?
I think magic's in the learning.
Cause now when Christians sit with Pagans
only pumpkin pies are burning.

When Amber tried to do the dishes,
her aunt said, "Really, no, don't bother."
Amber's uncle saw how Amber looked like Tim
and like her father.
He thought about his brother,
how they hadn't spoken in a year.
He thought he'd call him up and say,
"Its Christmas and your daughter's here."
He thought of fathers, sons and brothers,
saw his own son tug his sleeve, saying,
"Can I be a Pagan?"
Dad said, "Well discuss it when they leave."

So the Christians and the Pagans
sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground
the best that they were able,
Lighting trees in darkness,
learning new ways from the old,
and making sense of history
and drawing warmth out of the cold.

My post was a commentary more on "coastal sophisticate" than on "Yokeldom." But it appears those who live in or come from the Red States find it easier to believe one could use a phrase like "coastal sophisticate" without irony than a simple, descriptive phrase like "Yokeldom."

When have I done what you wanted?

Being a good, god-fearing boy, like most of us here in New England, I would not dream of celebrating a pagan holiday. Do you guys even go to Mass on Christmas, anyways?

I go to a non-denominational Lessons and Carols service on Christmas Eve, generally. However, both churches and carols inexplicably make me cry, so last year and possibly the year before that I skipped it.

I take it you observe Christmas purely as a religious holiday, and don't do any decorating with the pagan trappings of holly, evergreens, mistletoe and tree?

Of course not mistletoe, but I feel that the tree et al. have been fully appropriated into the religious holiday and have an appropriate symbolic role. We put an angel on top, though I know many like stars.

Didn't you read AG's post? The marketplace is the most reliable measure of competitive merit.

I go to a quasi-pagan ceremony with my family and friends on Christmas Eve some years. It's beautiful and makes me cry (though I try not to, because it's outside and generally below freezing so tears aren't a really good idea). Afterwards, we all eat lots of posole and finish up with wrapping presents.

Hypocrite. You are what you purport to despise.

And your kids know it.

I'm happy to have the pagans over to dinner, and burn the pumpkin pie.

So are you a star person?

What happens at your quasi-pagan ceremony?

Geez, now I'm getting all sniffly just thinking about Xmas services. And no, I really don't believe in a higher power.
