Other than put-put, I have not picked up a golf club since my ONE ill-fated golf lesson in the 6th grade....until yesterday, when I humored my boyfriend and went to the driving range with him. I never though hitting a ball (that wasn't moving) could be so hard. I missed one for every one I hit. My back is sore today. How do all those fat, out of shape men go golfing once a month and manage to walk upright the next day?

On another note, I saw They Might Be Giants for the first time on Saturday, despite being a fan since middle school. Best energy and entertainment I've experienced at a show in a long time. Two thumbs up for anyone on the fence when they come to town.

I saw "In America" this weekend. I'm beginning to fall in love with Netflix. The movie was incredibly well-acted, and the camera and lighting work was incredible.

The movie, for those not familiar with it, concerns an Irish family that comes to New York so the father can get an acting gig. The story centeres around their adaptation to life in NYC as he tries to land an acting job.

Djimon Hontsou also features prominently in the story as an artist who the family befriends. He is very good, and it's amazing how much of his accent he has lost since he first started films.

Highly recommended.

"Daddy Day Care," not so much. Sometimes the monsters get to pick the movies.

Did we watch the same interview? It sure didn't seem like he had any problems with telling Jon Miller and Rick Sutcliff on ESPN that he was rooting for the Sox. And that the DH rule sucked.

Missed the interview, but the story I saw quoted him as saying he needs to win New York, but wanted the Sox to win.

I saw Riding Giants this weekend...the big wave surfing documentary by Stacy Peralta (of Powell Peralta, my first skate board was a Tony Hawk Powell Peralta circa '80's) with great footage of Laird Hamilton and Greg Noll....a must see for any surfing afficionado....shit, y'all should see it whether you surf or not.

I read over the weekend that Ricky Williams has decided to retire from the NFL. He told the Miami Dolphins about it as he was boarding a plane for Asia for seven months of traveling. I think he broke up with the Dolphins over the phone.

Anyhow, he's 27 years old, played for the NFL for five years, had a few endorsements, and I'm assume he's made at least $20M or so in the five years he's been with the NFL. His contract this year, with incentives, was around $6M. Also, he's been busted by the NFL a few times for smoking pot, which is a violation of their substance policy.

His agent looks like he's trying to do some damage control, and Mike Ditka was lamenting the "thrown away career." I'm sure all the sports analysts will be deconstructing this whole thing for the rest of the week.

I'm thinking "good for Ricky." If I made what I thought was enough money to keep me comfortable for the rest of my life, and I wasn't really happy with being in the spotlight, why the hell would I stick around? How many opportunities do you have to trek around the world while you're still young?

Cris Carter is saying that the fans are the big losers here, but I'm not seeing the fan disappointment as a good incentive to stick around doing something you don't want to do.

He has never seemed happy to me, although I suppose it's not like I would know. I think he told a Miami reporter that he doesn't need the money to be happy, which is cool. Good for him. The NFL will ream him, since it's all about sacrificing your own personal well being for the team, but the league will be OK after it sleeps around a little, maybe with the NBA or NASCAR.
