I like your response but would like to add that my big screen, and other tech toys are each just as much an investement, IMHO, as buying stock or bonds because I am "investing" in my pleasure and happiness and the returns I get from laying out a few thou for a tech toy far surpass the greatest gains in the market. As an added bonus, I am so happy at home with my tech toys that I generally don't feel the need to go out and spend money on other things -- for example, before I got my huge screen I went to more baseball games and now, although I still go to a fair number, I am happy to sit home and stare at my boys of summer larger than life with theatre sound and not get robbed for a beer. So I am happy and have more money in my pocket to boot.

Third: Your second point missed the point. I was merely responding to what's-his-name when he said that there was no difference between a $2000 system and a $10000 system and if person wants to spend $10000 on an amp and it doesn't mean waiving child-support payments, then what the fuck do you care? People spend money on dumber shit than that (homerun baseballs, ugly art). Get off your horse and maybe sit a listen to a $10000 amp - or maybe you're just not a music lover - then that's ok - spend your money on bonds and shut up.

Those people in New York will be sad to find out that when the power comes back on, a lot of their electronics will have blown out. The service departments will be packed with people with dead computers, TV's and stereos from the surge - all which could have been avoided with a $100 (NOT $10) surge protector. NO, I don't work for a surge protector company, but have many many friends in "the business."

Four points:
One, your silly agression and erroneous Timmification suggests that you tie a lot of your self-worth up in your possessions and knowledge about them. Have you though about trying to better your life in ways that can't be summed up in a page on some home theater website?
Two, When you're talking about how someone is going to "invest in the electronics," you surely are not talking about an "investment." Is that what you're saying? Because, if that's what you're saying, I don't really need to respond to that.
Third, I'm not arguing that there is not a difference or misunderstanding your simple point that there is. I was making a different point, which you seemed to miss in your desire to lash out at me for what you perceived to be a personal attack. I'm simply arguing that most people don't think that additional quality is worth all that extra money, and that a lot of people who are into home theater and premium sound don't get that some people choose to spend their money on other things, even though it might mean that their systems don't sound as good. I do know how fantastic high-end stuff sounds; I just have better ways to spend $50k or so.
Four, since this is all in good fun, I will only bite you if you moan a lot and talk about my "amp" and your "receiver."

That's lovely third hand knowledge of a place.
I am not a native Texan. I was here before the boom and I am here after the bust, so I think that makes me a Texan and not one of those Californians who have now returned from whence they came.
Houston is a lovely city, with big beautiful parks, world-class museums, outstanding restaurants. It's cosmopolitan and the people are friendly. What more could you want in a big city?

Well, that whole law of diminishing returns thing is sort of like the conservation of energy one. At some point, shortly after you find yourself wishing that the backup guitarist had purchased higher-quality strings, and would put that damn sound-absorbing paperback book behind his stool, you realize that a chain is only as good as the weakest link.

OK.
And I will only "receive" your "amp" if you're properly "hardwired."
Edited to say - all you dice guys are confusing me.

Who determines whether you are an -ian, -an, -er, -ite, etc. and how do they do it? I mean, why are there Atlantans, Angelenos (or is it Angeleans), Houstonians, New Yorkers and not Atlantites, Angelites, Houstoners and New Yorkans? Somebody? Anybody? ![Confused](http://www.lawtalkers.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)

Snow. Lots of snow. Don't you guys keel over from the heat?
But Houston sounds very lovely. If you tell me who makes good ice-cold lemonade, I will go for a visit someday.

Just funnin with ya. There was too much Texas love going on and I was trying to shake things up. Actually I have a very good friend who lives in Houston and he loves it. Says Woodland Hills is a great place, I've seen pictures - it's nothing how I envisioned Texas.

I feel the same way about my car. I know that it lost half of the value when I drove off the lot but I am so happy when I drive it that nothing else matters. I guess it all depends on what a person likes and the value they place on things. I don't like to vacation and can't see laying out a few thou to go to Europe but I tell people that spending the money on season tickets to hockey is the same as having 42 mini vacations for me and my family.

I am an Austinite. I grew up on the east coast, but I fell in love with the hill country.
When I was in law school, I was here interviewing for jobs and found the friendliness disconcerting. People talked to me everywhere -- the waiting area in firm offices, elevators.
Now when I travel back east, I wonder what's wrong with everyone else.

God bless hockey - and the fans with such heart. Much more so than pansy baseball fans.
