It will, and the new fillibuster rules will be fucking yours, and America is worse off on both accounts.

As a Republican, I tire of being portrayed along with the christers. I'm sure the normative Democrats tire of being lumped in with the WTC protesters. FWIW, this move by gays in SF was easily the most positive, forward-thinking thing that has been done for gender-associative rights in our history. The issue has now been forced, and has been forced in a way that is obviously for the benefit of the normal gay community, instead of the cross-dressing assertive parades that have been, probably, so helpful to individual egos, but harmful to a movement.

As to, isn't this illegal, or, wasn't the prohibition unconstitutional? - Well, we'll see. Now, it's going to go all the way up, and I'm not sure the S's will be able to say No. I don't know this SF mayor from Adam, but what he's done will be, I think, the most helpful move for gay people that anyone has taken. I suspect that a lot of certificates will be declared void, but those cert holders are the new Rosa's, and will be first in the ranks of the new marriages when they open up in two years, because of all of this.

Thus, movement in rights is born. Good for them. Good for us.

Was advice and consent one of the things that changed on 9/11?
Sort of makes the next election even more important.

Fuck you. The thinking core of the party remains libertarianism.

Unfortunately, it appears to be made up of Bilmore, Slave, and SgtClub. Oh, and Hank.

Since you asked, and only since you asked:

I truly hope that Democrats will not spend too much time abasing themselves, begging Ralph Nader not to run again for president in 2004, as he seems likely to announce he will do on Meet the Press this Sunday.

Certainly, this latter-day political narcissist has already made up his mind what he's going to announce. So there's no point waiting to call him what he is: an enemy of progressive change in this country and a cat's paw of the Republican party.

If anything, calling him a 'cat's paw' is too generous since a dupe at least doesn't know he's being used.

In any case, I have a rough confidence that this won't be as damaging to Democratic prospects as some fear. Because after the last four years I just don't think that many people will get in line again behind this pied piper of political oblivion.

Late Update: A reader notes that since Nader now isn't even running as a Green, he has apparently abandoned even the pretense that he is in the race to create a viable third party in American politics. If he runs, it would now be strictly on a platform of vacuous moral posturing and self-aggrandizement.
Sounds right to me.

How many thinking libertarians has Bush named to circuit courts? 'Cause you can't be happy to see Pryor there.

I have to wonder about this guy, and why Bush wants to expend so much political capital getting him in (unless the expenditure is more aimed at "don't fuck with me".)

I simply can't get good info on this guy - the two presses are so politicized, there's simply no good factual record I've found. I've seen him excoriated for saying the U.S. should be following the bible, but, at the same time, I see the hard-core christers are pissed at him 'cuz he fought to get Moore (the 10-commandments judge) dumped for disobeying the higher court. So, I have to wonder if our "news" system isn't so totally fucked that none of us operate, ever, on the same premises. Scary thought.

Roy Moore (was that his name) was an unbelievable gift to Pryor, since it gave him someone even farther out there to contrast himself to.

With a lot of nominees, it's hard to learn just what they think. I heard a lot from a blog named Ignatz -- don't have a link now, sorry -- by a guy who has an appellate practice in the Eleventh Circuit and got to see positions taken by Pryor as an Attorney General. Even that sort of thing is sometimes hard to articulate.

And I don't think he's spending political capital on this. He pissing off Dems who aren't going to support him anyway, and it's red meat for his base in an election year.

Also, Bilmore's not raising his kids Christian so there's a greater than 50% chance they'll vote Dem when they turn 18. Scary thought.
if they get convicted of a felony (not Enron type) the number goes to 83%.
