Based on that photo, I suspect that they appealed to entirely different types of chicks. High school cheerleaders and future Tri-Delts at UT? George. High school French Honor Society presidents/Model UN delegates and future Bowdin gals? Jeb.

I think W got more, but Jeb had higher quality and was more picky.

So, you were a big supporter of almost-Justice Miers? Not my recollection.

I don't think she was ever a serious nomination. He threw her name out there to honor her for all her hard work... that sort of stuff.
Kind of like Adama naming Kat the new CAG, even though she was about 15 minutes from dying.
That it backfired on Bush so badly - his bad.

It is a cigarette. The question is what kind?
Laura Bush is known to smoke and drink white wine, but only in private.

Better question, why is he wearing a tie but no belt? Why are any of them wearing ties? Especially if they're going to throw them over their shoulder? Why does Neil look like the mailman and not the rest of them?

I am concerned he chose to hold a cig for the Xmas card and this was permitted. Good Methodists would not approve. Though of course at the time they were all Episcopalian, in which case I'm not sure why they cropped everyone's G&T out of the photo.

I'm kind of (mildly, because I'm sure that it's to differentiate him from his siblings, or whatever) disturbed by the "from all the George Bushes."
ETA I'm assuming the tie thing is some kind of very funny WASPy family joke.

Hmmm. I'm sure she was thrilled. I don't think of a S.Ct post as kind of a "thank you" honor or sinecure, but what do I know?

"Harriet -- here, have a seat. I have great news!
I want you to know that I, and my family, deeply appreciate all you've done for us over the years. And I want to honor you for that.
I'm gonna nominate you for SCOTUS. You're going to have a moment in the sun in which the press will pore over every aspect of your life to this day, and you'll be discussed and dissected endlessly on every cable and broadcast outlet, newspaper and worthless blog known to mankind.
Now, we're going into this with the knowledge that you probably won't be confirmed. Now, now -- don't worry. I'm thinking this is going to be all pomp and pageantry, in which all the media outlets and members of Congress say nice things about you, and conclude that you're well qualified, but ultimately decide that maybe we should choose someone else for the seat. And we'll have you step aside gracefully.
Of course, there's a small risk that it could all go horribly awry, with both you and me becoming a laughingstock both in the eyes of Democrats and Republicans everywhere, and this nomination becoming an emblem of my comically bad judgment in office. But I'm sure that's not going to happen.
So. Ready for the press conference?"

Looks like under SD law, the governor would appoint someone for a short period, but that a new election would be held in 90 days or so to fill the spot for the remainder of the term. Um, maybe.

Duke Case
- DNA testing conducted by a private lab in the Duke lacrosse rape case found genetic material from several males in the accuser's body and her underwear _ but none from any team member, including the three charged with rape, according to a defense motion filed Wednesday.
This is getting ridiculous - Do these guys have a claim for malicious prosecution yet?
