Early reports are that even on a 200 foot screen, Ben Affleck still fails to connect with his audience.

Oh wait, so you are saying his failure to connect isn't just because I'm not into guys, even ones with lantern jaws? I feel better now.

I saw a few months ago that the University of the South Pacific law school in Vanuatu is looking for a few professors. If I didn't still have law school debt, I'd be applying myself (one is paid in Vanuatuan currency, and the brief research I did indicated that while it was more than enough to live very comfortably in Vanuatu in most circumstances, it also converted to about US $30k; my law school debt would eat up a third of that each year - I'm still keeping it in mind for when the loans finally get paid off in a couple of years).

No idea what the Vanuatuan position is on gay marriage. Or even if the term "Vanuatuan" is correct.

Heh. Thanks. I was more thinking New Zealand, Canada, England. But you never know. I'll be sure to look that one up though.
ETA apparently not a good idea. http://www.britishhighcommission.gov...=1065720270359

Yes. Though consistent with the theme, Affleck's challenges run deeper than the obvious plot problems in Gigli.

A Confederacy of Dunces
A movie is apparently in production, with a script by Steven Soderbergh (not a bad choice), though production is "stalled" according to IMDB.
A few choice casting decisions:
Ignatius - Will Farrell
Mrs. Rielly - Lilly Tomlin
Jones - Mos Def
I did not know this, but John Belushi, John Candy, and Chris Farley were each slated to play Ignatius, but each dies shortly after being cast.

Ignatius' insanity is not "crazed frat guy." It is more subtle. Will Farrell will fuck it up. It was also scheduled to be John Goodman (10 years ago). John Goodman could have done a very nice job.

Oh, I hope they don't fuck it up! I've seen so few book-to-movies and this is too good a book to fuck up!

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

What? This?
Quote:
Crime, particularly burglary of houses occupied by members of the expatriate community, is still relatively low but it is becoming a more frequent occurrence and is often accompanied by violence. Street crime is also increasing and you should take sensible security precautions and avoid making yourself an easy target, especially at night.
There have also been several serious attacks recently on foreigners, particularly women, in isolated locations and when the victim has been alone. You should avoid travelling to, or visiting remote tourist sites or beaches by yourself. Where possible, travel as part of a larger group.

Or this?
Quote:
Homosexuality is legal in Vanuatu but open displays of affection between same-sex partners will attract adverse attention and may offend some in Vanuatu.

I mean, okay, it's no New Zealand, but it sounds pretty decent for a third world nation.

I agree that it could be very easily fucked up, but I think Farrell may be able to pull it off, definitely more so that Candy or Farley. Belushi would have been fucking amazing. Goodman, meh, maybe.

But I've heard the nausea that many people report from the standard Imax action films also occurs with the Affleck movie.

I dunno. Anything's possible, I suppose, but after getting my money's worth watching "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" on a recent flight, I'm not optimistic.
Though I did like the a capella rendition of "Afternoon Delight," there's little about Farrell's stuff that suggests subtlety resides within his acting toolbox.

I love The Iron Giant. It's very sweet. I liked The Incredibles, but I confess I did find myself looking at my watch a couple of times.
Polar Express always looked like a bomb to me.
