I don't think anyone would disagree that it's ill advised to remake this film. J-Lo and Ben will not get the kids interested in this story. Half of them wouldn't even be able to tell you where Morocco is let alone anything about the Vichy French or the Resistance.

That said, I was thinking more in terms of the personas of modern movie stars and how they compare to the old movie stars rather than even in terms of pure acting ability.

Sure, I think it would be easy to make the argument that there are far more talented people working in the movies today than in the 30's through 50's, but that the personalities are not as strong overall. I guess what I'm talking about is the difference between a movie actor and a movie star. One is more defintely based upon the power of personality than ability alone. I think the older stars have this all over most other movie actors working today.

I like your female role suggestions, especially Gwynneth (and it would get her out of the tendancy toward fluff of late). If they went with a Rick as old as Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster could pull it off. How about Cameron Diaz? She's a deceptively good actress who plays too many light parts because they pay better for women. And she's got a bit of quirkiness to her that could add to the part.

Rick is hard, though. Most of your suggestions would overact the part; Mel Gibson could have done a good job 10 to 15 years ago, but the Mel Gibson I've seen of late couldn't. The best honorable lout that's been played in the last ten years is George Clooney in Three Kings, though he's never acted as well in anything else (except maybe Brother, Wherefore Art Thou). Johnny Depp may be getting old enough (with some makeup) and is a hell of an actor with good emotional reserve.

How about a Will Smith/Charlene Theron reprise? They'd each have to step up a level, but I think they could each do it.

So I think there are a lot of actors/actresses who could play these parts, but who could direct it? It's a slow, steady carefully paced movie.

Some of the titles in E/O's link are pretty good. I particularly like "knocking on heaven's back door" and "Behind the Sphinc Door". And I'm guessing a certain tech-savy regular has already seen "Dinner Party II: the Buffet."

Assuming it must be done, you would have to find actors who could carry off the combination of smoldering sex appeal and emotional reserve -- while being excellent actors.

Call me a crank, but maybe if people would start making good flicks, people would write better scripts and we wouldn't waste time rehashing old flicks. Remember that remake of Psycho a few years back? Sal Mendes did it frame for frame exactly as Hitchcock did. Why?

I have never liked ANY musical and unfortunately, I've seen a whole bunch (my folks wanted a flaming son, but no number of trips to Broadway would get me singing show tunes).

The worst is Phantom of the Opera. I cringed through the whole thing... but I gotta admit that original singer had a crazy voice.

Second worst is the Sound of Music. I'd rather read every Jane Austen book than watch it again.

When I stopped watching (sometime in season 2), we had learned that all straight people are evil homophobes and all drug use will lead to addiction, death and destitution.

I did love the spoof show Gay as Blazes though. Oh and the sex scenes were often quite good.
