Sell more papers? That's small thinking. Single-handedly defeat a recall election? Now, that's power.

Here's a story in the LA Weekly about all of this that's interesting. The story contains no factual support for its thesis, ("Insider knowledge" only) and so, for now, should be read only as innuendo, but it will be interesting to see if it fleshes out in the coming days. If it does, I would expect to see the top layer of the Times looking for work, as the owner attempts to retake some semblence of respectability.
I don't read the LA Times -- like, ever -- and so I have no particular reason to doubt this thesis. But one should be suspicious when conservatives start suggesting that major corporations are acting contrary to their economic self-interest.

Interesting editorial now in the LA Times.

Seems the Cali voters have made their choice out of incompetence. They didn't pay attention to the issues, they base their decisions on stupid grounds, and they have the attention spans of dolts.

I think they're just trying to win back their readers.

It is an interesting piece, but it's not what you describe.

I went back to it to get some pithy quotes to throw at you to show you that you were wrong.

I read it again, more slowly this time, and realized that you are correct. I was over-affected by the lead-in link title that brought me to it.

Shit. I hate that. (Being wrong, not lead-in links.)

I really didn't mean to defend California voters. Not tonight anyway.

No he doesn't. he claimed the Adminitration chose to release the Kay report on the day of the week it would get the least possible coverage. he also said that Bush since claimed that the Kay report is vindication of his decison to go to war. The statements are not inconsistent -- and are both true.

Bilmore -- quick question. Sine we've only reviewed 8% of the possible sites, let's assume they were the 8% top priority targets. It apparently took us 4 months to do it. All of this is pur speculation -- But what are the odds that we'll actually spend another 3.5 years there to search 100% of the sites? And that those sites will contain the huge pile of CW and BW promised by the Bush Administration -- along with a "reconstituted" (per Cheney) nuclear program?

the allegations against Iraq on weapons could be broken into 2 catagories:
1 we knew it once had tons of weapons. it was suppose to show it destroyed them. It won't. therefore, we must assume it still has them.

2 it seems to be doing things consistant with the continued intent of making more.

We all expected type 1 evidence, and other than some trace bacteria, we haven't found type 1 evidence. The threats of chemical attacks against troops and the barrels found early raised expectations such evidence would be found. Those criticizing the administration or the "misinformed" seem to focus on the actual weapons, but forget type 2 evidence.

in the report there was evidence of continued possesion of several things consistant with continued effort to make more, at least someday. its not the sexier stuff, but type 2 was certainly part of the reasons we were told we would need to take out Sadamm.

as to whether there could still be weapons found, I can only interpret what we hear, and what we hear surely implies that weapons could still exist in Iraq, and still be found.

look at Club's Yahoo link yesterday. people on the ground in Iraq think it possible Sadamm is hiding in Baghdad. If that's possible, it certainly is possible a few barrels of shit could be hidden somewhere.

but anyway, from the sidelines, reading all of the posts on the report it does seem the difference between the opinions is how you think of the type 2 evidence.

Islam is a religion Of PEACE, and MOving FOrward, BUt nOT forgetting the PAST

http://www.cairotimes.com/news/corruption2.html (spree: dull article about Egyptian corruption) To sum up, the Egyptian gov't, led by a dedicated elliot Ness- like presidential appointee, is working to clean up corruption:

"It has been the investigations of the Riqaba Al Idaria, headed by presidential appointee Hitler Tantawi, that have been responsible for the majority of the arrests, giving credence to Ashour’s "green light" theory."

it good to see Mr. and Ms. Tantawi tried to move beyond normal Islamic dictates and gave their kid a more European name. I wonder if there were allegations of any prejudice during his confirmation proceeding.

Egypt is still a corrupt shithole. I wouldn't invest a dime there. Egypt is the no. 2 recipient of US foreign aid. Need another reason for stopping the flow of money to them?
