- MADISON COUNTY COURTS: SWJ: Likes erotica, skinny-dipping
There's good news and bad news for the notorious plaintiff's bar in Madison County this week. On the one hand, a national tort reform association says Madison County is not the biggest "judicial hellhole" in the country any more.
On the other hand, there's Judge George Moran Jr., and his Internet dating site. The judge advertises that his "turn-ons" include erotica, skinny-dipping, flirting, power, money, dancing and long hair.
Personal injury lawyers are the backbone of the Democratic Party in Madison County, which is why Judge Moran now says he's worried about his bid for retention in next year's election. The judge told the Post-Dispatch's Paul Hampel that party leaders have abandoned him because: (a) They said he had skipped work to take Spanish classes, in part to meet women, and (b) He'd submitted a 28-year-old photo of himself in his black judicial robes on a listing on the match.com dating site.
"I've had some good luck with that site," he said. "I've met some beautiful women. I dated a former Miss Alabama."
Bob, if you're ever in front of this guy, maybe slip some nice Adult links into the Judge's copy of any important briefs.
Here is how he looks now-
But he used this shot (28 years old) for his ad.

A Mild Chili Cook-Off
Brewster County Game Warden and Reeves County Game Warden assisted the Brewster County Sherriff's Department with law enforcement at the popular Terlingua Chili Cook-Off. The wardens report this year's cook-off was rather "tame" with few arrests being made.
As reported in the Lone Star Outdoor News

get this man to a barber
I know this sounds like petty jealousy, and everyone knows that if I had the breaks Duncan got I'd be a multi-MVP, and most guys would be jealous of how full his hair still is, but I really think he looks bad with the new hair- and that is objective and not based upon the jealousies. (you can't really tell from this photo- but from TV it was clear. maybe he just had morning hair, but I don't think so.)

Tony Dungy's son really screwed either Marvin Lewis or Lovie Smith out of Coach of the Year.

Leave of Absence
Has anyone ever taken one of these? I need to either take a leave or quit entirely and I don't know how to go about this. I don't know how long I will need - I do know I need to do this now and my caseload would not allow me to just take a vacation. I need to go now and I need someone to cover my cases.

As you are aware due to our earlier instant messaging communication, I received this morning a letter addressed: "Dear debt capital markets professional:". It is one of the more disturbing pieces of correspondence I have received in 2005.

Do you have a mentor (that you trust)? May be a good place to start. If not, I'd still start by asking some partner you trust. It'll ultimately be up,probably, to the department head and HR will be involved at some point, but I'd start by finding someone to help get you to the right person with the right script.

I've done this. Something came up and I requested a two-month LoA. It's not that hard (depending on who you work for). I actually took two weeks of paid vacation and the rest as LoA. Firms don't frown on it as much as everyone thinks because (1) they'd rather keep you and they know you'll quit if they say no and (2) they don't have to pay you during the LoA.
I went first to the chair of the hiring committee and asked if it would be possible and let him know how long I needed. He gave me the okay, as long as the partners I worked for did as well. Then I went to the head of our office and then the head of the corporate department. They said the same. You can go to them and tell them that something very serious and very personal (if you don't want to discuss it) has come up and you need __ months away. It's easier, once you have the okays of the Hiring Committee, Firm and your department, to tell the partners you work for what you intend to do. Then it's not so much a request as it is a courtesy.
Good luck!

Sounds complicated. Wouldn't it just be easier for ABBA to blow her boss, a/k/a PLF?
