Vacation defense tactics - poll?

Five? Five weeks a year?

Now I see why no one cancels my vacations. I don't get that much, and they feel sorry for me. I technically get three, but I've never been able to use three in any 12 month period.

I am, however, all over the long weekend.

I've averaged five weeks a year, sometimes, more in the last few years. But, I usually bill a few hours on most days during vacation.

I'm modeling myself after a guy who takes 3 months in the summer and one month in the winter, but works from little offices we've set up for him near his vacation homes. I will consider myself a true success when I can take four months as well.

This way, everyone is always feeling bad about interrupting my plans, appreciative for how out of the way I go for them, and secure in the knowledge that they have a lawyer who would do anything for them.
Now THAT is a cunning tactic. Well done.

I usually book months in advance so I can try to make acknowledgement of my vacation time a pre-condition (or sorts) to my being staffed on new matters, but there is one partner I work for who, when told 6 months in advance (when I am not in fact doing any work for him) that I have a vacation planned will invariably start looking shifty and say "well, I don't know ...." Seriously. This is the same partner who invariably calls 2 minutes (always exactly 2 minutes) after my stated pre-vacation departure time and has 3 or 4 completely bullshit things that I have to do before I can leave. He also has a habit of calling my desk at 9:30 am sharp for absolutely no reason other than to make sure I am there in case he needs to call me. Major control issues, non?

BR(if no one is irreplaceable at bonus time, why do our vacations get cancelled?)C

Jesus. All my clients and coworkers would be too distracted thinking "She is on vacation ALL THE FUCKING TIME!" to be thinking any of that other crap you seem to think people think about you.

ETA a partner who used to take one two-week vacation a year at a prior firm was talked about constantly behind his back. While the issue was exacerbated because he was really unavailable (rural areas of foreign countries), just the being gone 2 weeks was bad. Even my clients whose companies shut down at the end of the year for a week or two needed us around because inevitably they'd have to come in to finish up conversions or amendments to plans.

Somehow my coworkers like the idea of me being on vacation. I have no idea why.

Actually, I am too distracted thinking about how sad it is that he's not yet a true success.

He's having you on fringe. He doesn't actually take 5 vacations. No way any of us takes 5 weeks per year, unless you work for the Government. Even in-house only get 3 weeks.

Is there any element of surprise in your sadness?

I'm thinking he's gotta be working for the gov't, in which case the person with the multiple vacation homes is, what, a trust-fund baby?

Is G3 a trust-fund baby?

An amazing number of companies have "shut-down" in corporate offices during the holidays -- on top of the vacation. Nice work if you can get it, eh?

I get 4 a year and I can bring up to half what I start any given year forward to the next year. So some years I have 5 or 6 weeks vacation. I never use it all though, I can't be out of the office that much.

Not true. At the in-house situations with which I am familiar, at a certain title-level, you get 5 weeks.

And you can carry forward vacation, and/or buy extra vacation, under some vacation arrangements.

I try to block out all the nice corporate vacation benefits when I'm done reviewing benefits for transactions, or I start to cry.

Song poll

On another forum, someone's relating last night's drunken events and the songs that she may have sung. Everyone else piled on with what they usually end up singing when drunk.

Poll question: When you're drunk (or otherwise in a position to spontaneously burst into song) what do you end up singing?

Me: Always Janis. Usually Mercedes Benz, though sometimes Me & Bobby McGee or Ball & Chain, and if I'm feeling very ambitious, Piece of My Heart.

I usually belt Mercedes Benz at the top of my lungs, usually walking home from some party or bar within walking distance. Always when I'm walking home alone (with the notable exception of my 22nd birthday).

What crises are you taking care of in the office that could not be done from a hotel room, setting aside a couple hours in the morning and maybe an hour or two some evenings?

If it's all about the billable hour (and I know for you it isn't, though for most of us it is) and keeping clients happy, it's not hard to expand your vacation if you're willing to work some during it.
