They're my Bills too. That's why they must lose. I watched yesterday's games wearing my blue, white and gold #7 Flutie gamer -- the one with the lightning bolt on the shoulder.

On a different subject, Les Moonves said in an interview in today's Daily Variety that cancelling "The Reagans" movie received the most public reaction from anything he's ever done at CBS. "Except for when we cancelled Dr. Quinn. I still literally get 100 emails a month."

Huh? From whom? I put Dr. Quinn in the "Jag" and "Third Watch" category. You know, those shows nobody I know has ever seen.

Austen and Male Bashing

(Not that I doubt what is, I'm sure, a faithful account of your roomie's experience, I just don't get it.)
Ditto. I've never noticed that Austen books (or Bronte for that matter) lead to any particular level of male bashing. with Austen it is mostly it is a discussion of how rigid the social mores of the time were.

FWIW, I think *any* college class with 23 women and 1 man would turn into a female bonding/male bashing/bitch slapping the only guy extravaganza. No matter what we read, my first book club (all female 20-something attorneys) ended up with bashing whichever member's BF was behaving badly that month. From there we moved into bashing male partners & associates and ultimately male bashing in general. Sometimes we didn't even get around to discussing the book.

Alan Rickman is totally on my laminated list. (Speaking of lists, I went on an all women weekend cabin camp-out last month. While playing cards I brought up the concept of the laminated list. Not only had none of them ever heard of the concept, they couldn't even come up with 3 names apiece. Y'all have corrupted me!)

The Mrs. likes Third Watch. But then again, she'll watch almost any drama.

JAG is horrifically bad. And you can't even say that Catherine Bell is hot on the show, because she's all bundled up and stuffy. I think that JAG is one of those holdover CBS shows from when CBS was the schmaltz network. Touched by an Angel, Dr. Quinn, etc. Awful.

Turkey Hater's Thanksgiving

As un-American as this may sound, I don't really like turkey and no one in my family is crazy about it either. I find it to be too "gamey" tasting. We always end up with a shitload of leftover turkey that never gets eaten, since no one really likes it. I'd rather have roast chicken instead. Has anyone ever had a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner? What about a pot roast? I LOVE all the Thanksgiving side dishes, so we would definitely have things like apple-sausage stuffing, garlic mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, pumpkin pie, etc. Anyway, I am leaning towards the pot roast idea... Any other recommendations out there?

It wasn't Austen; it was the wild eyed feminists in the class.

You should get a Butterball--they've grown all the taste out of them. Personally, I'd love it if I could find a nice gamey bird without having to order special from Orvis or something.

But why not just cook up a chicken or three, if all y'all like it. We did that one year (well, my mom and I, after my dad died and sister was out of country). No need for a huge turkey.

And if fowl isn't your thing, what about a pork tenderloin or three? (if you're not jewish, of course)? It should go with the other fixings pretty well. Perhaps put on an apple/maple glaze of some sort.

Possibly they think if gay sex can't consumate a marriage, then it also can't violate one.

I vote for Tofurky.

You could also serve roast beef or pheasant.

You don't use one of the working ones. You take a baby and let the adults keep working the land.

I vote for roasted chicken. If you have no issue with the big poultry farms (oh shit, what debate am I opening the door for) and you have Purdue stuff in your local stores, Oven Stuffers are a nice size, mostly breast meat. I used to make that for my mom at Thanksgiving because she doesn't eat turkey. Chicken will go well with all the other Thanksgiving fixins if you are into those.

Yum. Now I am hungry.

Turkey alternatives

My family usually has both turkey and prime rib. The traditional sides go great with both. I glaze the turkey with honey and marmalade or some other combination, which keeps it moist and gives it a sweet, non-gamey flavor. Several family members who usually hate turkey have commented that they really like it this way (which is why Thanksgiving dinner's always at my house now).

The sweetness also gives a nice contrast to the savory/spicy (with lots of peppercorns and horseradish) prime rib, for those who want to have both. Both take a lot of time, though, and a lot of oven space, so it's not practical for everyone.

So will we be swapping recipes again this year? I made C2ed's mom's famous rolls last year and they got rave reviews. I also made a butternut squash soup that was not worth the effort (peeling that squash is a pain in the ass). I may try an asparagus soup this year.

Mmm, Thanksgiving.

You can be very Dickensian and have your Christmas Goose a month early.

[Note: you must consult your local butcher as Goose is not as easy to obtain as Duck, and can be quite expensive)

You can also stuff a breast of Veal, or do stuffed Veal Chops.

Fair enough. But I know of no other class at my college (or anyplace else) that had a similar ratio (which would have been 23:0 but for a moronic faculty advisor), so I'm sticking with my chicks like Austen, guys don't theory.

So I take it you weren't that only other guy in my class on the Shellys and Lord Byron?
