Anyhoo, the version I sing (in English -- my people are from a part of Erin that had the Gaelic stamped out of them by The Oppressor) was written after the United Irishmen uprising of 1798. From that list, I learned I had been mispronouncing a word (not the only one for sure) my whole life. I didn't know "forte" was pronounced fort and not FOR-tay; now I have to consciously remember to say it the right way.

Another peeve is ask pronounced ax. And not in the pronounciation field, but "borrow" used in place of "lend," as in "Will you borrow me a dollar?"

In that particular post? Well, I had a vague recollection of the 1798 uprising being the inspiration for the song. I knew the tune, and assumed it was based upon an old melody.

As for the rest of the post, the "you had me at noHdaq" line was all me. As was my expression of undying love for TPFKADS.*

But we all have many reasons to be thankful for google. (edited to add that if I were one of those people who were concerned about the possibility of whiffing, I might wonder.) (edited again -- uh, obviously I am one of those people. Oh well.) In a similar vein, I remember having an argument with some Massachusetts friends (you might even say they qualify as Massholes -- not in a pejorative sense with reference to their characters, mind you, just that they have the wicked fee-yass [that's "fierce"] Mass. accents [and not the JFK kind] and often talked about trips to the "packy") about the incorrectness of the phrase "So don't I" when what they mean to indicate is "So do I."

I believe I had this conversation at age 8. It was a harbinger of my later, uh... fastidious (?) tendencies.
