I want one of the brown Coco Crisp Sox shirts, just so I can use it in the t-shirt quilt I will get around to making someday.

The Flu

My sister, a seasoned marathoner, is due to run the Marine Corps marathon this weekend. I'm supposed to be going to DC to watch her. Unfortunately, on Tuesday she came down with the flu. I've never had the flu (knock on wood) so I can't really relate, but she sounds very sick. Can't get out of bed, fever, chills, vomiting etc. She is still keen on running this marathon. I think that even if she recovers enough to feel somewhat better by Sunday, the plane travel and marathon running will really do a number on a fragile immune system. I'm trying to dissuade her from doing it (even though I totally want to see her) because I don't want her to collapse during the marathon or get even sicker next week.

Am I being a real old lady about this -- should I not dissuade her from doing it? Anyone run a marathon right after having the flu?

Running a marathon in those circumstances seems like a terrible idea. You have my proxy.

We were going through pictures to see which ones looked silly, and one of my Jewish friends said [of the big-nose picture], 'That could be your Jewish cousin!' And I guess it was fresh in my mind, and it just came out of my mouth. But I didn't mean to offend anybody. I didn't. I didn't mean any harm.

So Halle Berry makes an anti-Semitic joke and who does she blame? The Jews. I believe it’s time to hire a new publicist. You know, one that isn’t Hitler. In the meantime, somewhere, somehow, Mel Gibson has a giant boner.
When she just blurts something out it doesn't mean anything. However, if someone white just blurts something out, it is proof of their secret racism deserving of flaming and firing, if not flogging.

Or as WWTDD.com put it "She could kick a baby down the stairs and I'd still try to get into her toaster. I don't care if she hates Jews, the Irish, Eskimos, kitty cats or rainbows, it's still Halle Berry. I could walk into her bedroom and see the Nazi flag and a head in a jar and I'd still take my chances."

Sox and Rocks - Fringey can skip this post

Interesting article on the Boston Colorado matchup from the LA Times.

Mr. Plashke is a lot more confident in the outcome than the Sox fans I've talked to.

I had the flu several years ago and going back to work after a week sick in bed took all the energy I had left. I don't think I could have run for the bus much less a marathon.

Whether or not she decides to try running the marathon, she should go to her doctor. There are meds that help with the symptoms.

I have heard mixed things on whether he is ON, or was on an episode. Do you know which it is?

I don't have TV, but I might possibly be able to lurk around filming locations.

ETA OMG! He got a name, not just #6! And was on his 3rd episode last night!

Thanks. I have a feeling she's going to back out by Friday.

But I think the problem in your last point in this case is twofold: (1) I don't think that the antiviral drugs have been approved in Canada, and (2) if she takes something to relieve her symptoms, but doesn't actually get better, and she runs this marathon, it might make her sicker because she's feeling better than she actually is. Or perhaps the drugs don't work that way -- but if they just mask symptoms rather than improve the condition, I don't want to tell her to get them.

I had the flu three years ago, and it was such a miserable experience that I've become near religious about getting my flu shot every year so as to avoid going through that again. My eyeballs hurt. It took me a good four weeks to get back to the point I could crawl into the gym for a half-hour pansy workout. While I can't imagine running 26.2 miles under normal circumstances, running it after all of the energy has been sapped from my body and replaced with aches and coughing and general ugginess seems downright suicidal.

2. I had the flu my 2nd year of law school. I had flown to New York to spend the weekend shopping with my mom. Saturday morning, I got up, bound and determined to tough it out. I made it through breakfast, at which point I croaked out "I have to go back to bed." I did not leave the hotel until my flight out on Monday. My mom was so worried about my health, she changed her plans and flew back to Boston with me, where she spent 4 days sleeping on my couch while I slept feverishly in the bed room.

3. I hear she has an extra toe!!!*

*Gratuitous shot at Thurgreed, just because I can.
She's not that bright. From the big-nosed-jew joke to the hit-and-run, she's proven that she needs handlers. But pre-11th toe, she was so hot that it just didn't matter. I'm still looking for a replacement. <sniff.>

i thought the flu was 3 days. did it change since i last had it? are people who take unnecessary antibiotics to blame?

gwnc, if she is seasoned she'll know what she can and can't do, won't she?
