Once every few years or so an ice storm hits. 1983. 1989ish. 1997. 2007. Texans don't really know how to drive on ice, so it's best for everyone to stay home. The freezing rain was supposed to happen last night/this morning, but apparently it's been pushed back a day.

(It snowed on Christmas eve and Christmas day 2004, but it wasn't so bad as to shut down the city.)

When your entree comes with, say, steak, potatos, and beans, do you eat them seriatim, or a few bites of each, rotating through?

Do you eat all of your burger before starting in with the fries?

I hadn't thought of that "not knowing how to drive" part. I remember when I lived in DC they once got like 3 or 4 inches and basically the whole city shut down for 3 or 4 days. I heard a news report that street cleaning had been complicated because the salt trucks and plows could not go out until the snow stopped- honest- they couldn't find plow/ salt truck drivers that knew how to drive in snow?

A good snow is magic for kids 5-12. But an ice storm not so much.

They're drawing from the pool of DC area drivers, who don't know how to drive in the snow.

I can assure you that the DC government has changed its approach. They now send around a table explaining how they will get the snow cleared within X hours, depending on the amount of snow. E.g., 2 inches is gone in 12 hours; 6 inches is plowed within 24 hours; 24+ inches is plowed by Easter. However, despite those commitments, they never, ever meet them.

We don't have plows or salt trucks down here, much less people who know how to drive on ice with them. Best we have are the sandbags that are on hand for hurricanes and front end loaders on tractors for construction projects.

How many times has it snowed enough (and the snow lasted long enough) even to trigger these commitments? I mean, give them a chance to prove themselves!

You're right. It's probably snowed a dozen times since they first issued their proclamation, and they've met the commitment of clearing 2" of snow in the three instances where the temperature went up to 45 immediately after. Huzzah!
