Or perhaps because he wants to win.

I think Boras has floated ideas of $40 mil per year and/or possibly a piece of the team for ARod after retirement. The Yankees should say, "Suck it," if he asks for that.

Right now, he's the best player in baseball. But why should we pay someone more than twice what another player who (normally) puts up 20-30% less stats, makes?

$30 is probably the baseline of any negotiation. Money is not the factor here, though. It's all about prestige. You don't think Steinbrenner is willing to pay a premium to have the best player in baseball on his roster?

Just because Cabrera has similar numbers to ARod at the same age does not mean he is going to improve at the same rate as ARod. He may be at or near his peak right now (which would be fine with me). It also doesn't mean he will have the longevity and sustained success ARod has had. ARod is a physical specimen. Cabrera, well, let's just do a photo comparison of the two, who are 8 years apart in age:
Fair point, except that a big part of ARod's improvement was a result of moving to that bandbox in Texas. If Cabrera makes a similar move, his stats take off, too. I also think that Cabrera reins in the fat a little.

At age 40, no. But we're not talking about a comparison of just the last few years. We're talking about the next ten years. And I think that if you total them up, ARod will have better numbers.
If Cabrera doesn't maintain some level of fitness or continues to play in Robby/ProPlayer/Dolphin stadium, then it won't be close. If he goes to the Red Sox and plays under 275, then I'm not so sure. We'll know in 2017.

Quote:
Okay, but ARod is 30 right now and he is on pace to break Maris' record (for real).
I'm not sure about what you're saying--ARod hit his 31st last night and still isn't on pace to hit 62 (31 thru 86 games projects to 58+, not even 60). Granted, if he hits 62, he's the legitimate record holder. And he'll probably hit 800 for his career.

Quote:
I don't see a serious drop off in talent for ARod over the next 5 years. The guy is a stat machine. And if he stays in shape, I don't think the drop off will be that extreme after that.

Anyway, if ARod wants more than $30 mil, fuck him. I'll take Cabrera.

TM
Nobody saw if coming for Griffey either. He's been a mess since he turned 32.

Please stab my ears with icepicks.

Is there a worse current song, especially one played on self-styled "alternative" radio stations, than "Hey there Delilah" by Plain White Tees? Or, for that matter, a worse band name? I shouldn't be feeling burning hatred on a Friday, but that song leaves me little choice.

Oh, and if you SoCals felt a little burn on Wednesday, it's 'cause you were getting sooooooo flipped off.

but they actually had some good songs, in the sense of your mid-teen daughter's music choices make PWTs a favorite.

I know nothing about them, other than that one terrible, terrible song. The mid-teen girl demographic makes sense, though.

I happen to know that if you slam so hard on a horn that it gets stuck on -- and you have to drive five more miles home in traffic -- you will really annoy a lot of people. And your spouse will laugh at you.
