This writer thinks shows such as "Idol" and "Apprentice" (and, oddly, "Curb") are harbingers of the end of the indulgent culture of "the coddled generation" --- the kids of entitlement whose every bowel movement was praised by parents and teachers for fear of damaging their self-esteem.

Please note: Gratuitous slams against Manhattanites are because the piece is reprinted from the NY Observer. The print edition SF Chronicle really couldn't give a smaller shit about TCOTU.

Gen X & Y will be coddled until the truly coddled generation, the boomers, fuck them in the ass by doubling secial security and medicare taxes to provide boomers the same benefits current retirees receive.

I admire her scaliness and that blood-drinking look in her eye. But I'll hold out for the x-box boutique. And Frankie Rayder.

I didn't catch any of the red carpet shows, but here are a few notes from the awards show itself:

Renee Zellweger looked tons better than at the GGs. If she's started losing the weight, she should stop soon--she looks way better at the happy medium between inflated and skeletal.

Liv Tyler looked positively statuesque. I loved the design of the dress (one of those styles that's flattering to many), but was less certain about the colors.

Amber Tamblyn, though she may be great on Joan of Arcadia, is alarmingly pear-shaped (I know I know, pot, kettle). Her ass in that dress was scary.

Jane Kaczmarek looks great for a woman with several (4?) children, especially one under a year old, but she really should have covered her arms. Melissa Gilbert also had really bad arms, plus a dress that squished her into a mono-boob.

Stockard Channing needs to lay off the tanning. Charlize Theron was also looking a bit over-bronzed (though otherwise lovely, as always--I especially liked her earrings).

Frances Conroy's dress could not have been more ill-fitting. Yuk.

Keisha Castle-Hughes was wearing a beautiful and age-appropriate dress.

Debra Messing looks fantastic. I hope she doesn't lose all the weight after she delivers. I also really really liked her dress. Gold is a good color for her.

CZJ also looked yummy in her gold dress (hooray for not black!) and her loose hair, though her bang area was looking kind of odd--awkward grow-out stage?

Sorry, couldn't resist. But I know what you mean about the bangs--I hear that's the new trend, and I think it sucks. Women, don't get bangs, please.

W WORD TO THE WISE, I SHARE WITH YOU

If ever some button pusher at the social security administration accidentally hits the wrong key and someohow changes your birthdate by a month in the computer, DO NOT attempt to straighten it out...simply assume that date as your new birthdate. Attempts to remedy it will be futile. Your birth certificate that you've used for ages as a form of ID will be useless to you, your passport irrelevant, and most importantly of all, if you were born in D.C. the copy of your birth certificate received directly from teh source that the SS administration is requiring as the only form of acceptable proof of your birthdate will be MIA because some idiot who works for D.C. Vital Records undoubtedly used it for scrap paper during a budget crunch, and then threw it out afterward, thereby taking with it your only hope of ever reclaiming your actual birthday as your own.

And why you might ask would the social security administration think that a cracker born in D.C. would want to falsely change their birthday to a month earlier that what is currently reflected in the SS admin database? Why, all 29-year-old women plot for an early retirement by trying to scam the social security administration for an earlier birthdate.

This has been a public service announcement.

That's all folks.

Brazilians are Such Old News

Hot news at my local salon: you can now get your mitt waxed into a festive four-leaf clover for St. Pat's (green dye for small additional fee); a peace symbol; a rose; your astrological sign; or, to really impress, your S.O.'s initials in either modernist block or elegant script.

Let the grooming begin!

As sympathetic as I am to your point, it would certainly bother mine.
Not nearly as much as voting for someone who, sincerely or not, panders to those who think it is acceptable to rob my fellow citizens of their civil and human rights to bolster their popularity. But I guess some things are more important than trying to change a long history of oppression and discrimination and protecting people from the denial of equal rights under the law.

You know how we all want to think "gee, back in the '50s and '60s, I would never have stood by while people perpetuated those separate but equal Jim Crow laws that treated black folk as second class citizens, 'cause it was obviously wrong, so I'd have been one of the [minority] who stood up and fought for what was right and just and refused to compromise (or let the people whose policies I endorse with my vote compromise) for the sake of short-term convenience and popularity"? Well, we, too, have that opportunity. What are you going to do with it?

I saw something about how Arnold wants a constitutional amendment to allow naturalized citizens to run for president after they've been u.s. citizens for 20 years....do you think there's time for that to pass before the next presidential election?
