I guess the queerness I see in his change of heart is that I still believe that the shit he wrote earlier, using the word, was funny, and opened a very honest race dialogue. There's a huge pile of great comedy that pours out of making fun of the way races perceive one another stereotypically. Walking away from a valid legacy of that humor, which I think requires a subversive embrace of the word, is an overreaction.

The better course, in my opinion, is to make fun of people who use the word stupidly. If black performers would start skewering blacks who use the word recklessly and cheaply, the word would fall out of vogue, or at least be used in a funnier, smarter way.

I don't think you can just kneejerk to giving it up. It's far too potent ammunition for good satire. And if black performers did give it up, it'd just regain its old racist meaning among diehards who still use it. Why give them back the word? This "ban" smacks of good intentions gone overboard. Debate is good; bans of any sort are usually failures. That the "solution" to such a complex matter could be so simple indicates it's probably not a solution at all.

I don't think people are having a knee-jerk reaction to Richards' racist rant. I think they are trying to seize the opportunity to change the way the word is now used. This was a high-profile incident and I think that many people who don't believe that the word should ever be used are trying to convince others that the word really has no place in our society.

I tend to agree with you a bit though (although I don't think if blacks stopped using it that you would be giving the power of the word back to whites -- whites shouldn't use it now and shouldn't use it if blacks stopped using it; but either way, if they do use it, it will piss black people off). I don't think the word should be banned. That's silly. It is a word that is important to our collective history. I don't necessarily agree with how pretty much every young person seems to use it now, but I guarantee it is less meaningingful to the younger class than it ever has. I don't think it will ever be innocuous, but it's not the lightning rod it used to be.

I find it a tad bit odd that we have now discussed this subject into the ground for over a week now. and you still have not commented in depth [if you have, forgive me] about the recent police shooting in Queens.

If you feel strongly about race, do you do diversity work, pro bono work or work within the community regarding race relations or cultural think tanks?

I would find it a tad bit odd if you had anything to say of substance on any topic at all. Of course, you haven't said anything of substance in this last comment and this is not odd. Also, there is not much to say about the police shooting. I could say that I find it strange that there was supposedly a guy with a gun who got away, but the unarmed men in the car were pumped full of bullets. I could also say that it's weird that they replaced clips to continue firing into a car full of unarmed men. I could say those things, but I chose not to because the whole thing is incredibly depressing. It was a dirty shoot that probably wouldn't have occurred if the passengers were white.

And it's even dirtier in that 2 cops supposedly only fired one bullet each. That tells me that they were told by the cops who emptied their clips that they had better fire their weapons as well, so they all had the same incentive to tell the "right" story.

At the very least I am halfway pleased that Bloomberg said something other than Giuliani's old standby "I stand by the police until the investigation has concluded."

I could find it amazing that you seem to want to call me out on what I think about the Queens shooting without saying anything about it at all. But, you're an idiot, so unless someone said something about Koreans always being beautiful, it doesn't suprise me at all that you have no thoughts on it and think I should comment on it. Generally, it's kind of sad that people who aren't black tend to avoid expressing anger or sadness over a shooting like this because they aren't black and think that it isn't their issue.

I feel that 50 shots that he fired on an unarmed man on the night before his wedding night, after we have been through this with Diallo and Dorsimond to be mind blowing on a lot of levels.

I am very skeptical about this "4th man" who "had the gun" and "must have stashed it somewhere"

And this professional theory about "contagious shooting" where the shooting "catches on and grows" is just sickening.

Ultimately, the police need to exercise some fucking restraint and stat. If they can't train them to do so, then they need to figure out a way to teach them alternative methods that do not include slaying unarmed men.
