I'm reading Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan right now. So far so good. I'm also reading The Beach by Alex Garland. I keep putting it down for awhile and then picking it back up, and I can't say I'm really into it.

Though I have a self-imposed ban on buying any more books due to a backlog, I'm always on the lookout for recommendations. Any suggestions? Has anyone read the most recent Jasper Fforde (released earlier this month) yet?
I haven't read the latest Thursday Next book (I've only read the first two, so am I missing one or two?), but I'm looking forward to it. Speaking of Alex Garland, I quite liked the Beach, but I LOVED The Tesseract. Not sure if it was just the mood I was in or what, but it seemed to hit so close to home. I think you'll like it RT.

Sure enough, aye.

I've always imagined dtb as having an Audrey Hepburn accent, and I imagine RT's accent as being just like Catherine Zeta Jones in Zorro. But then, I imagine RT as being Catherine Zeta Jones in Zorro.

Now Bilmore has one of those funny accents straight out of Fargo, obviously, Spookyfish talks like Urkel, and Hank speaks just like the Skipper.

Anyone else have an obvious accent on this board.
On this board, no. I relax a little when I'm on the Texas board, though.

Having followed the game via matchtracker at the ussoccer.com website and having spent most of the evening out drinking, I was happy to get home in time to see the 2 minute highlight reel (thinking that the game got more coverage earlier in the evening). If that is all they showed of the game, that is pathetic. Did they have an Up Close and Personal clip featuring Mia and Nomar as happy homemakers? I'm hoping FSW will buy the rights and replay the game at a later date. After a summer of boring EPL reruns they owe us.

In this day and age of canned Olympics I'm annoyed that none of the women's soccer games were shown in their entirety via tape delay during the evening or early morning. I don't mind staying awake at odd hours, but most of the folks at BIG LAW Boston don't understand my absence in the middle of the work day.

No soccer, but plenty of handball, field hockey and water polo matches involving mostly obscure teams. Sure, they are interesting and I'm glad they are not being buried, but could NBC (or one of the other gazillion channels they own) please show a soccer game at night? Not all of us can take off during the middle of the day. Then again most of the pre-teen "MIA!!" screamers haven't started school yet.

Costas' interview was pathetic. Did they put up any glamour shots of the Fab 5 during the evening?

Soccer PSA - US plays El Salvador in a World Cup Qualifier at Gillette Stadium on September 4th! Get your tickets now! It's also a chance to see Freddy Adu. Following the WCQ the Revs take on Adu and DC United.

Anyone pre-ordered their gymnastics DVD from NBC yet? ITUIMMALB

I'm really enjoying Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi.

Yes, I'm a few years behind on my summer reading.

No, not exactly. While I am "ethnic", I don't exactly look ethnic. (Hispanic can be of any race.) But before you jump in, my husband doesn't look "ethnic" either. He just looks Jewish (which he isn't).

When I lived in the South, I used to enjoy hearing the people there say that Yankees all sounded so stooooopid.

Being an uninflected Californian, I can say with equanimity that both the Brooklyn and the Birmingham sound equally fucktarded to the unprejudiced ear. However, I am favorably disposed toward the South because I've come to realize the famously sweet dispositions of Mayberry and Hooterville residents are largely true, but the sweet dispositions of the Sweathogs were an invention of television writers.

Also, when someone can show me a castmember of "Petticoat Junction" who converted to Scientology, I'll conclude the average stupidity of the regions is equal.

Damn, that hurts. I go away for a little while and come back to this.

I have an obvious, flat, Midwestern accent, for the record.

And I imagine you speaking like a Valley girl. Uninflected Californian, indeed.

I'd be pissed if my daughter picked up the guy working on our street though.
