Any recommendations (that can withstand intense activity and remain in the ears when running)?

I got these for skiing and running. Great sound - far, far better than the cheapies than come with mp3 players - comfortable, and they stay in.

(Shure E3's. About $160. Designed for athletic use.)

Can you hear external sounds? E.g., the car about to run you over?

To a small extent, they are "external-sound damping", but not nearly enough so that you can't hear the car behind you, or the out-of-control snowboarder yelling "loooooook oooouuutt!" from above.

(ETA - it's having the music on very loud that causes most of the external-hearing problems with phones, not the damping itself.)

I use the Shure e3c and can't say enough positive thigns about them. Terrific SQ, without a lot of size and weight. Like any canal phone, they're a bit uncomfortable at first (kinda remind me of those worm things from the Wrath of Khan) but they're absolutely worth it. Also, they can be found for around $120, which is way below their MSRP. PM if you have specific questions.

Those things cost more than the JBL SoundStage.

Yeah, but it would be a pain to have to keep re-duct-taping that thing to your head every time you came back out of the chalet.

I wear it like a headband.

Unintended side benefits of a plumbing disaster

Setup: Toilet line in apartment above my friend's place leaks for a week before his landlord can get to it. Bathroom wall has to be removed, dryed out, and rebuilt. Lots of contractors involved:

Quote:
Finally re: industrial dehumidifiers - They're big boys. Up to my waist. And as it happened the second dueling contractor to come out, positioned one in my bathroom entrance, preventing the door from being closed, causing me to have to eel past it and with the pwowerful exhaust fan near the top blowing back across the toilet. Somewhat disconcerting at first, especially if trying to read while on the throne. Also since the door won't close I had to close one of the kitchen blinds across from the bathroom every time I used it for fear of permanently traumatizing one of fine young neighbors.

However there was one unexpected side benefit. The first day it was in place, as I got out of the shower I noticed an odd sensation. And...well...I'll just come out and say it - for those in the 5'9"-5'10" range, it makes a damn fine scrotum dryer. Now scoff you may and I wouldn't normally recommend getting one for just that purpose, but if you everdo find yourself in the that odd position where you need one - you might as well take advantage.

And if I ever become so insanely wealthty that I am running out of ideas of what to do with my oodles of cash, a built-in bathroom pubic dryer for my uniquely styled mansion may not be the absolutely last thing on my list .

RT: Please don't give these as gifts to the kids on your street.

Everyone else: Don't wear these in Texas.

Between that and the pube dryer, I think you've got the presents you need.

That's just the earphones, right?

Those seem nifty -- but my question is what sort of device is there to play the music or radio (well, I guess that would be a radio) into which you would insert the aforementioned nifty headphones? I was considering buying an ipod, but didn't because of the conversation I saw on here about how the ipod wasn't designed to withstand the attendant jostling that occurs when used while running.

Who says the FB isn't useful? In fact, let me take this opportunity to thank all of you for allowing me to reference popular culture phenomena as if I had experienced them first hand, so as not to seem like a hopeless, out-of-touch nerd when engaging in lighthearted conversation with the outside world. I wouldn't know ANYTHING if it weren't for the FB!
