Does anyone know what the difference between a bridle with a regular noseband and a crank noseband is? I'm not sure I know what a crank is. Or else I don't know what a regular noseband is. I need a flash -- but you can use a flash with a crank or a regular, I think. What's the diff?

I think it's an extra $50 with the crank.

Larson leaves the heavy lifting to 'Complete Far Side'

Cartoonist Gary Larson calls his 20-pound opus a two-volume set that includes every Far Side cartoon in its 14-year twisted history "a hernia giver." But, he says, the heft has mostly to do with the quality of the glossy paper. "I don't think the cartoons weigh that much."

The Complete Far Side (Andrews McMeel, $135) will be published today, nearly nine years after Larson retired as a daily cartoonist. Or, as he puts it, "I hung up my eraser, the most essential tool I owned."

Ask your tack shop. But I think it's a one-piece vs. a two piece thing, with the crank allowing for greater adjustment by tightening the connections between the front and the back parts. But you got me on the flash.

Every time I think to call, it's after hours, so I just figured SOMEONE on the board would know. I'm trying to decide which one to bid on (e-bay). In the pictures, they look the same.

As a former crack Pony Club member, I am well positioned to answer your question.

A crank noseband differs from a normal noseband because it is not just one one piece of leather making up the noseband. It has a front piece that is joined at the back by a separate strap. If I remember correctly, it is supposed to be to apply even pressure all around the horse's nose. It is for better control. It is wider and more heavily padded. Used in dressage more than just on a regular basis.

See, I just KNEW someone would know! Thank you! So I guess what I have always used IS a crank noseband, and I just didn't know it was one. So does a non-crank noseband just have one buckle? (How else would you get it on?) OK -- crank it is!! (I think btw, that the person on ebay selling it is a fellow countrywoman of yours! I think I overfraternize with you people.... Homeland Security will be after me any day now.)

If you happen to see me in a persistant vegetative state for ten plus years, and someone is fighting against taking the feeding tubes out, please refer that person and any relevant courts, governors and legislatures to this post.

I do not ever want to be kept in a persistant vegetative state. Take the tubes out. Let me die.
