Kaus on Kerry

I missed this earlier. Kaus discusses both the Kerry interview
  • Kerry was so soporific and frozen-featured in his Tom Brokaw interview last night (Wednesday) that while he was talking the network resorted to running moving photographs of a candle, a 9/11 poster, a child in a field of flags, a U.S. soldier on patrol, a flag-draped coffin, etc.--instead of the traditonal head shot of the candidate answering the anchor's questions. ... Maybe next time they can show film of John Edwards on the stump or sneak in an update of the box scores. ... P.S.: Does Kerry just seem like a man trying very hard to avoid saying anything? ... 6:12 P.M.

And the Bergermeisterberger:
  • Tom Maguire has a complicated but seemingly promising theory of the Berger leak that I don't quite follow. Maybe you will do better. (Query: Do we know that the earlier "after action" report of Clinton's 1998 cruise missile strike against Bin Laden is actually missing? If so, isn't that the lede, and not merely a way to explain how the Berger investigation might have leaked?) 5:50 P.M.

We're told that Kerry didn't know about the criminal probe of Sandy Berger's document-handling. (See, e.g., Kerry's NBC interview, quoted here, and today's WaPo account, citing "Berger allies.") That puts us in Roger L. Simon's Box #2: Bill Clinton knew about it. Kerry didn't. So why didn't Clinton warn Kerry? ...2:33 A.M.

You know Ty, sometimes a Clinton cigar is really a cigar.

Signed Petition to Get Nader on the CA Ballot

Not that it will matter in CA, but all you GOP'ers in the up for grabs states should seek out these Naderites to sign their petitions.

more Berger weirdness

The memo the drafts of which Berger is accused of liberating from the National Archives concerned an episode that the Clinton Administration considered a signal success of its anti-terrorism policy -- its planning for the Millenium. Richard Clarke's book touts the Administration's effort to prepare for that as responsible, along with some luck, for foiling efforts to bomb a hotel in Jordan and the Los Angeles airport, among others. So it makes no sense at all that Berger would be trying to hide those materials from the 9/11 Commission. Which, in any event, says it saw everything, never mind what conservatives are saying about Berger:
  • There is nothing random about the documents he took. Berger stripped the files of every single copy of a single memo which detailed the Clinton administration's response to the Y2K terror threat.

  • DOBBS: Let me ask you, not necessarily directly on point, but certainly related. Sandy Berger, the former head of the national security -- national security adviser under the Clinton administration, accused of, and admitting taking classified documents from the National Archives, those notes, whether copies or originals still unclear. Did the commission review that material, to what -- can you shed any light on what happened there? [Former Republican Senator] Slade Gorton, first.

GORTON: Well, we can't shed any light on exactly what happened there and on Sandy Berger's troubles with the Justice Department and the Archives. What we can say unequivocally is we had all of that information. We have every one of those documents. All of them have -- are infused in and are a part of our report.

DOBBS: So the commission was denied no information as a result of whatever Sandy Berger did or did not do at the National Archives?

    GORTON: That's precisely correct.

GORELICK: And we have been so assured by the Justice Department.

Just remember that if sunlight touches your skin, you'll turn to stone. Unless you find a really power unguent -- SPF 15,000 or something. Make sure you're back under the bridge by daybreak!

I'm not doubting what they said publicly. Buy look to the words in the Report

"Later on August 20, Navy vessels in the Arabian Sea fired their cruise missiles. Though most of them hit their intended targets, neither Bin Ladin nor any other terrorist leader was killed. Berger told us that an after-action review by Director Tenet concluded that the strikes had killed 20–30 people in the camps but probably missed Bin Ladin by a few hours. Since the missiles headed for Afghanistan had had to cross Pakistan, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs was sent to meet with Pakistan’s army chief of staff to assure him the missiles were not coming from India. Officials in Washington speculated that one or another Pakistani official might have sent a warning to the Taliban or Bin Ladin. (Footnote 46)"

46. NSC email, Clarke to Kerrick,“Timeline,”Aug. 19, 1998; Samuel Berger interview (Jan. 14, 2004). We did not find documentation on the after-action review mentioned by Berger. On Vice Chairman Joseph Ralston’s mission in Pakistan, see William Cohen interview (Feb. 5, 2004). For speculation on tipping off the Taliban, see, e.g., Richard Clarke interview (Dec. 18, 2003).[my bolding]

Sorry - this clearly infers they didn't see EVERYTHING.

Those events don't relate to the drafts Berger is accused of thefting.

And it doesn't say there were documents missing -- maybe Tenet's "after-action review" wasn't documented.
