True, you need something more. It's still cause for further inquiry, however. As it was with the FDA chief who failed to list Merck (or some prominent drug co.) on his disclosure form.
|
Sure. The reason you require disclosure is to make corruption easier to spot.

Don't minimize the disclosure violation, however, which is of great significance. No, there was not ultimately a conflict of interest that arose, but to suggest that failing to disclose should be "no harm, no foul" is not a sensible course.

My understanding is that he disclosed it in his personal name but did not disclose it when it was transfered to a pass through entity he jointly owned with his partner. Do I have this wrong?

Karl Rove -- man or immortal? Matt Yglesias says:
- It's worth pointing out that this election ought to demolish the Myth of Karl Rove. From the GOP perspective, while losing five senate seats is worse than losing four, losing six is much worse than losing five. Since the 2006 climate clearly wasn't favorable to the Republicans, the obvious thing to do would have been to concentrate resources on Republican incumbents running in red states -- Virginia, Montana, Missouri, and Tennessee. I feel like there's good reason to think the GOP could have won two out of those four had they focused. Instead, they tried an ambitious strategy of picking off Democratic seats in New Jersey and Maryland, two solidly blue states.
Interestingly, Rove made the exact same error in 2000, engaging in an absurd late-game effort to campaign in California. He then lost the election, only to wind up with Bush securing the White House through a series of incredibly unlikely events plus a partisan Supreme Court. Then in 2004, he did something similar with weird last minute gambits in Hawaii and New Jersey that put his candidates perilously close to losing Ohio (and with it the presidency) not withstanding a decent-sized popular majority. Learning nothing from his good fortune except an unhealthy sense of infallibility, he proceeded to do it again and then, finally, have things genuinely blow up in his face.
Not sure what I think of this.

I'm trying to imagine how Kerry would have fucked that one up. Maybe we need a poll.

Bush has surely made sexist remarks before (heck, I just made one about 5 minutes ago), but I don't think that this was one of them.
Instead, I took it as a graceful way for him to eat his words about the Dems "measuring the drapes" before the election (which is a relatively common attack by people who are down in the polls against male and female candidates).

2. Bush is quite good with the self-deprecating, good-natured crack. (My favorite was his comment -- I think he was in Canada -- noting the people who waved to his motorcade, "some with all five fingers").
It's when he tries to explain how he's going to fix policies or statements that he cannot concede were anything less than perfect before that he gets in trouble. Like, somehow it's the American people's fault that we formed the perception that Bush's intention was to "stay the course" in Iraq, just because he said "stay the course" a few dozen times....

From cnn.com
Sen. George Allen will concede the Virginia race to Democrat Jim Webb when he addresses supporters Thursday afternoon, a source within the Allen camp told the National Journal.
Thoughts?

He collapses on the floor in a drunken crying heap. As he's slapped awake, he mutters, over and over, like Orson Welles at the end of Citizen Kane, "macaca... macaca..."
The only man to lose an election based on word that doesn't exist.

I would say that he's running for Senator Warner's seat in two years, except that I read on The Corner yesterday (I think) that he's was building a ground game in Iowa and New Hampshire and was telling people in Iowa that he didn't want to be a Senator anymore.
I think he can put to rest the idea of being President.

He ought to write a book. Then we can see what sells better: stories of "Little Maccacca" or blue war novels.

Damn. Don't get me wrong - I've found Allen to be supercilious and annoying for nearly two decades, but, well, I hope Webb isn't a jackass.

thoughts?
1) the Dems think the military is made up of poor, and poorly educated, dumb people.
2) lacking any issue, the dems recruit a number of military vets to be candidates so they can play butch.
contradictory?

The democrat party and leftwing mainstream media lies shamelessly.
The reality of the next two years is that:
THERE ARE 49 DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE.
THERE ARE 49 REPUBLICANS IN THE SENATE.
THERE ARE AN EQUAL NUMBER OF REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT SENATORS.
THERE ARE 2 INDEPENDENTS.
Stop lying.

Oh. Right. Bernie Sanders and Michael Dukakis will be swing votes -- with the Ds or with the Rs on most issues? Who knows?!?!? I apologize. My boo-boo.
Luckily Ds and Rs are tied this way, or Cheney'd get to vote sometimes. Heh.
