Wow, I am really working through some major issues today. Thank you, lawtalkers, for being my rock and my sounding board. I am feeling much better adjusted now.

He really should have just let you buy legwarmers.

ppnyc, you have to decide what works for you. it will probably annoy people if you whine about being fat when you could be working out in lieu of other activities, but as long as you don't freak out about them being annoyed, who cares? You have to recognize and acknowledge that you have made a choice not to work out if you aren't going to work out, though. It may be the best choice for you right now, but it is still a choice.

So, apparently what she really wanted was for someone to tell her it's okay to stay fat.
Guess what? It's okay to stay fat.

Time I "prioritize" for fitness potentially could be time I could be spending with my children. That is not to say I may be using the commute, or long hours as an excuse. I'm just saying it is hard. And being compared to others "who have made it their priority" will not help me, I assure you.
I've tried to come up with creative solutions. Running in the am was one, running on the weekends on the track was another and I'm thinking about an elliptical. financially we have a lot going on so a gym membership might not be so prudent right at this moment.

Not sure why I'm jumping into this, but can't you do active things with your kids? Do they have bikes? You could go on bike rides together. Maybe on weekends they'd like to go to the track and walk/run with you. there are also fitness tapes you can buy that have family workouts with excercises that are fun for kids.
ETA: obviously these are weekend suggestions. During the week, if you want to lose weight and can't afford the gym, change into gym clothes and go walking or jogging during your lunch break. Does your firm have showers?
I would also like to say that my firm rocks because there is a pretty good gym in the building and we get free membership ("we" including staff) just for working here. So maybe you could switch jobs.

We do. The older one does soccer and both do swimming and obviously I watch the soccer games but we all swim and they like to play basketball which I am horrible at but try. I used to try to take the dog for a run, but he's huge and ended up dragging me around. I try to run around and play soccer at home with them, and walk .5 each way to work. 1 mile a day and some at lunch. The older one is starting football again, and I think fall baseball might be starting. just an odd time since camp is now right now.....soccer is fun.

Why does this make me hear that Porno for Pyros song in my head, "We'll make great pets... we'll make great pets."
Damn you.

It would be some exercise, but unless the kids are teenagers, she'll be really, REALLY slowed down by the kids. Like stop/start. Which is frustrating, if you are trying to get any kind of real workout.
But, it's a good idea, for the incremental effect on her health/fitness and for the example it sets for the kids. But only if she likes it. I am iffy on outdoor activities and would probably be homicidal in the summer heat with children.

I hope they either have a large, fenced yard or BF has a load of time on his hands for walks, playing and training. High energy dogs are brutal on apartments (and vice versa).
So, a young man talks a lot about wanting kids, but then "settles" for a _Jack_ _Russell_ _Terrier_?
Better check those finger measurements.

hmm, I tend to get a better work out when I run with my nephew bc he has so much more energy than I do, but I'm sure this varies kid to kid. Whatever, I shouldn't be participating in this conversation bc I don't have kids and I have no idea how that fucks up ones schedule. well, I have an idea, and it scares the living shit out of me.

it's hard. I'm not complaining but the little one is always hanging on me while I'm trying to help the older one do something so they compete for attn making it really hard to help either one and we're always shuttling from camp to the lake/beachy thing, to sports to practice to parties on and on.

Yeah, me neither, but they seem to slow me down even on walks. Maybe I just have been out with the wrong kids. I don't have a huge sample size. Oh well. Sounds like she's doing OK anyway.
Make your choices, and then back yourself on them like you would back the choices a friend/direct report makes.

At some point you'll have to face the fact that a 4 hour daily commute is no way to live. You should take the time you spend posting here and spend it looking for a job closer to home, or a home closer to work.

You are whining. I think it's the "on and on" that is annoying. Cut back on the structured activities for the kids and spend more time with them doing unstructured, active things. Or whatever. Is it Saturday yet?

TCOTU= farther away = cheaper
longer commutes than elsewhere. I take a packed train every day.
sorry to whine, I'll stop now.
