Are you serious? Fed. Cov't transportion costs are centered in a few states and supported by at most only a few more.

It's really Atticus more than the rest of us, and it's all a part of his effort to delegitimize prison rape. Just smile and nod politely, and soon he'll be buttonholing (no double entendre intended) the next guy.

How many congressmen get elected by running on a platform of cutting highway spending? Or by proclaiming that the federal government should get out of the interstate business and let those roads be the responsibility of state and local governments? That pork is some powerful shit.

Bush is a lame-duck President in 2005 (with no heir-apparent, unless they dump Cheney*). He can take the risk because their are no consequences

Did you miss the part of Bartlett's column noting that "most people support still more spending for education, health, and other programs"?

And "most people" support tax cuts. That the general population has always and continues to support this obvious contradiction is lost on many.

These fuckers from both parties are so gerrymandered in their districts that the only time there is a swing in either direction, it is because of retirement, not polls.

Then why don't the fiscal conservatives currently in power stop the insanity?
If you want to see the current gov't in action, check out the ETI repeal bill. They took a simple bill that was to get rid of stuff the WTO has ruled illegal, and now it's got so much pork in it (esp. the House version) that it's fucking ridiculous. The whole theory based on "cutting revenues will lead to spending cuts" is fucked up. Tax cuts are like dessert.

She'll have to sell it when it becomes a horse to help pay her share of the deficit, though. Make sure you warn her, lest she sneak off with your wife's pervie teacher.

In SlaveLand, Bush is a strong leader who nevertheless hasn't proposed balancing the budget yet because he's afraid of the consequences, but who will be freed, finally, to follow his conscience after November.

Not the GOP leadership, though.

Good for you! Get that through Congress, and we can start talking about tax cuts. But remember, your man Bush just exponentially increased the cost of Medicare.

Wrongo bongo.
Jeb.
After his two terms, George P. Bush (one of the little brown ones) will be ready to take the mantel.

No need. Running against Gore, did Bush boast that he was going to slash federal spending on these things? Um, not exactly. Turns out it's a crappy way to get re-elected.

Yes and hopefully that faux sop to the addleminded elderly will pay off at the polls. The increased cost will just make the budget savings look that much bigger when he later slashes the whole program.

Seeing as he's an incumbent and all, I really need to see a good-faith effort at cutting stuff before the election.
