That was a news story. With pictures. Do you want the whole story?

An NHL team owner who asked for anonymity said the league is expected to cancel the season either Thursday or Friday, possibly announcing it after the conclusion of Thursday's bargaining session, ESPN and Sportsnet.ca reported.

On my way to Houston tonight. Seriously. Via Philly (where I am going to try to have drinks with Sebby, the lurking fuck) and Boston (where I will be watching the Super Bowl because I am a masochist, but figure the odds are really good with all the drunk soccer chicks that Ann Elk is going to set me up with). Then, its on to the fats in Houston for three glorious days of witness prep, presentation, chicken fried steak, and Shiner. I know y'all are jealous.

Actually it's Hot Town, Cool City. I went to the premire tonight.

Houston, It's Worth It is still the unofficial motto though.

A good time to visit, as the flying cockroaches are out of season.

We have a lot more to offer than just fatties.

I'll try to find some fat people for you to hang out with. For local color. The Shiner has run out, but I still have the half-keg of Miller Light in the back yard. You're on your own for the rest, but if you're here on a Tuesday night, Ouise's has the best chicken fried steak in town.

I have a strong aversion to Ousie's. Perhaps it is because I went there once, fairly soon after it opened, which was right after I moved to Houston and before I started with the firm. I went with another female associate in the section, who was literally the biggest megabitch I have ever encountered. She's absolutely fugly too. The only time I ever returned was my required attendance at a closing dinner for the only deal on which I ever had to work closely with said megabitch. Ah, the memories.

Mark's is the same thing. I can't stand the place for similar reasons.

Poll: what's in your firm's kitchen?

Old for-profit office: Generic freeze dried drip coffee provided by coffee machine rental service, herbal teas, small selection of sodas, real milk. As a consequence of the truly shitty quality of the coffee, it was fully expected you would buy from one of the espresso carts on the street if you cared about coffee at all.

New not-for-profit office: Starbucks drip, Folgers as a backup (for the comfort of the older secretaries), herbal teas, larger selection of sodas, and several cartons of real milk all of which is individually labeled "You Toucha My Half & Half, I Breaka You Face."

The only drawback of my new office is that there are more women attorneys (read: there are some women attorneys), which means there's never any fucking Diet Coke left in the refrigerator by 3 p.m. I'm circulating the rumor that Diet Coke consumption leads to vaginal dryness; we'll see how that works on regulating demand.

I'm so tempted not to respond to this . . . but here we go.

1. LFM disputed my assertion that I was being paid "1/3 below market value." Underlying his post were the following assumptions, common in micro economics.

(a) People are rational actors
(b) There is free movement in labor markets

Based on (a) and (b), LFM said there's no such thing as somebody working for below market value. Everyone works for their market value by definition.

2. I then explained that I was in a lengthy employment contract. There's a risk that I would be sued for breach if I left early. Thus the common assumption about free movement does not apply to my situation.

But furthermore . . .

I also explained that I think it's fair to say that someone's salary (e.g. mine) is below market-value, and (implicitly) that person need not be behaving irrationally, if there are non-salary factors (experience, benefits, ease of job) that make the entire package the best available option at the time for the worker. It is still correct, in such a situation, to say that someone is being paid a salary below market value. At the same time, I would acknowlege that the total (monetary and non-monetary, economic and non-economic) benefits being received by that worker reflects his market value, assuming free information about other opportunities, ability to move freely between jobs, and zero transactions costs (as we all know, however, the transactions costs involved in changing jobs are huge).

3. You posted the crap I quoted above, which does not actually bear at all on our semantic debate about whether it is ever accurate to say that a worker is working for less than market value. And then you call me a moron? What the fucking fuck is wrong with you. Go fuck yourself.

I am patient and tolerant to a fault, and I make every effort to bridge communication gaps and help people understand each other.
Aw, quit your damn whining. At least you have your own stocked fridge.

I *love* bacon cheeseburgers. They rock.

I didn't use them in my comment about kashrut, though, because everyone knows that bacon is a kosher no-no, but not everyone remembers the "no meat and dairy together" part of it.

Sorry to all for my lame attempt to show off -- my only excuse is that I was trying to impress all the hot Jewesses out there in FB Land.

The grossest thing I've ever read on this board was when Wonk said something like, "You'll be a real man when you start snowballing. For example, my wife blows me and then we pass my spunk back and forth in our mouths when kissing." Now that's not only gross. It's weird.

The story.
I don't know why the kid or anyone else would expect that he should be able to keep $75,000 worth of jewelry. He was clearly joking around when he asked. I guess the only problem was that Daunte let him wear it too long. If he had taken it back before returning to the podium, the family wouldn't have already spent that money in their heads.

That said, I hate all that fucking jewelry. What a useless waste of money. All it accomplishes is a "nyah nyah, nyah nyah nyah -- You don't got no ice cream" attitude.

Pornocopia on HBO

I clicked on HBO at about 11 PM last night, and it's running a show called "Pornocopia." It was a behind the scenes look at women-on-women porn...that is it was women-on-women until I clicked to ESPN News, clicked back to HBO and saw some guy with another guy's nutsack in his mouth. I don't think I'm homophobic, but I still think I need some kind of warning for this.
