I read the first page and then decide I'll have to wait until I can concentrate more. I think my children will be in college before that moment arrives.

You are my SP. I think it was The Dubliners. It had the great short story the Dead that John Huston made into a great movie if you read the book, but an awful movie if you wanted any description of motivation. Kinda like Kaufmann's adaptation of Unbearable Lightness.

I tried reading some of them there scholarly notes before each chapter to help me follow, not only the many themes tackled by the book, but the fucking story (and yez, I know it's based -- and I used that word really fucking loosely -- on the Odyssey) as well. No good. STILL got lost on the regular. Save yourself the trouble and just read yourself some of them there scholarly notes instead.

It's called "Dubliners", and it is actually pretty good. Although almost all of my favorite authors fall in that time period. The Lost Generation fascinates me...

But no one. NO ONE can beat James Joyce for teeth-pulledness. I fought through Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and then tried to tackle Ulysses. What a fucking mistake that was. You know sometimes when you're reading something boring, you read all the words on a page and then pause and think, "I didn't get any of that; I was just reading the words while thinking about something totally different"? Well, I had whole chapters where this happened and I didn't even care. I only made it through half of it. Usually I'll force myself to finish (because I hate leaving something half done), but I had to just give up. Torture.

Agreed that Joyce is torture. Disagree that it is the worst torture.
The absolute worst torture is William Faulkner.
In high school, I was forced to read Absolom Absolom. I tried. Really, I did. Valiantly. After 14 pages with no punctuation, I gave up.
The next day, I walked into my english class and threw the book on the table (we had these long oval tables with chairs around them in most of the non-math/science calssrooms). THe book slid all the way across the table and stopped directly in front of my teacher. I looked at him and said "14 pages without a mark of punctuation. I am not reading this book." He leveled his gaze at me and said "As you wish, Miss Brazen." I love him still.

I can't believe the jury bought the guy's story ("we struggled for the gun and it went off and I cut the body into little pieces and dumped it the bay because I didn't think the police would believe me, maybe because this isn't the first time I've been involved in identity theft/murder.")
Word on the street is that the jury tried every restaurant in Galveston for lunch during deliberations. One juror even asked the judge to make a personal phone call for the juror.
Edited to add: This further cements the longstanding Houston understanding that if you're in criminal trouble, call Dick DeGuerin.

More on the story here:

I read in this morning's Chron that the judge had reprimanded jurors for hanging their heads out of the window to smoke. And that they started receiving sandwiches for lunch from the court cafeteria after the jurors repeatedly exceeded their $260 lunch budget. There may be a lesson here somewhere for trial attys.

I've been periodically watching the trial on Court TV. Dick definitely is the "go to" man when you're up to your ass in alligators. Durst doesn't look as freaky now as he did when he was arrested in Pennsylvania for shoplifting - bald and wearing a bandaid under the nose is not a good look for him. Rumor has it that his first wife is swimming (albeit in little pieces) with the fishes in a lake near his Westchester County weekend home, which he later sold.

It was only a matter of time
http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/TV/1...eut/index.html
Cable network Comedy Central is planning to turn the make-over hit "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" upside down with a new show called "Straight Plan for the Gay Man."
Debuting in February, the new show will parody the Bravo channel's "Queer Eye" series and male stereotypes in general as a team of straight comedians -- the "Flab 4" -- teaches a succession of gay men how to pass as heterosexuals.
The make-overs include lessons in such areas as spartan home decorating, oafish manners, less-than-fashionable wardrobes, and an overdeveloped ego to mask all personal failings, production executive Lou Wallach told Reuters on Monday.

Rosie v. Rosie
Supreme Court Justice Ira Gammerman, who is presiding over the Rosie v. Rosie bench trial, said he will rule on the dueling cases without hearing closing arguments sometime today.

Paigow put a Jesus figure in her first short stories ages ago, but four different dudes claimed author credit.

Transition
Did anyone watch the "Family Guy" episode Sunday night that Fox wouldn't air titled "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein"?

Nobody starts with speedballs. You have to work your way up from gateway drugs. High schoolers should start with "A Rose for Emily" and move on to intense babysitting with "The Sound and the Fury" (not at all hard after the Benjy section, but some hand-holding is required) or "As I Lay Dying."
If you ease your way into it, an otherwise impenetrable Faulkner book starts to sound like Garrison Keillor with corncob rape scenes.
