I agree. Black tie optional is, as you all note, bullshit. People send it out because they think their friends and acquaintances who have tuxedos ought to have an opportunity to justify (or "amortize") the expense. It's a racket.
Coltrane should break the BS cycle, wear the black suit, and save himself the hassle and expense of arranging last minute alterations -- that seems a really pointless use of your energy and money for the sake of a party where it's perfectly appropriate to wear a black suit. You'll be there for what, three hours? Nobody notices what men wear, anyway. I'll bet some clods will show up in blue suits with buttoned-down blue shirts, rep ties, and rubber-soled shoes. Most men wearing tuxedos at black tie optional parties seem vaguely uncomfortable in a "my wife or girlfriend or crush on the chat board made me do this" kind of way, anyway.
Besides, don't you think it would be highly inconsistent for a man with a roommate to be springing for a tux?

That depends on whether it is a roomate, or a "roomate."

YOU ARE FOOLING NOBODY. It would be like if I retired or something and then came back posting as . . . I don't know, some stupid sock.
Anyhoo, I don't mean to be harsh, but in a way I do mean to be harsh. Your antics have really gotten me steamed. Just end it with the PLF-bashing, O.K.? Your "secret" ironnutsedge sock is just lame-o and totally not clever. WE ALL KNOW IT IS YOU. YOU ARE NOT FOOLING ANYONE.
Except for Penske. He was fooled for a while, but then I told him what nutsedge was. He still didn't get it, so I explained that if you substitute "weed" for "nutsedge" (which is a type of weed), then the two monikers are the same. He still didn't get it so I just told him that ironnutsedge was your sock. Then I had to explain to hm what a sock was, blah blah blah. But I digress. Point is, he gets it now. As do we all. So stop your facile charade, you pathetic little bundle of pathos.
Yours very truly,
The Flower

Concur. This sock is more insipid than The Daintiest Petunia, and as we are all painfully aware that one was a real stinkeroo.

Funny. I was thinking just this minute that I had been too hasty with Coltrane.
Coltrane, my dear, wear your black suit. With a crisp white shirt and a lovely tie. Do not spend extra money on rush alterations. Give that cash to your favorite charity (or to my favorite charity if you prefer).
After the New Year, begin your search for a nice tuxedo. Take advantage of a good sale and get yourself a bargain. You should own a tuxedo, but you need not run out and buy one today.
My apologies.

Jeez, making fun of me b/c I'm poor? That's just mean. I'm sorry I can't afford your fancy Camrys and stationary houses, but this is AMERICA! It's only a matter of time, right?
And look at Joey and Chandler and Rachel and Monica, etc - ALL with roommates thank you very much. Same with those doctors on Scrubs.

Concur. Further to the point, I think Coltrane should borrow his roomie's best hawaiian shirt, the one with the paramecium fiesta on it, throw a jacked and tie over it and wear it with a pair of Jams and Timberland boots.

There is nothing wrong with suggesting a tux. You were kindly making up for the hosts' wishy-washy cloddishness.
That said, maybe Coltrane should go into full "Puttin' on the Ritz" mode, spats and all, and use the opportunity to beat the crap out of the host with his silver-handled, ivory-tipped cane.

It made just over $19 million over the four day weekend, less than Cold Mountain, and much less than Lord of the Rings, but about what the so-called "industry experts" expected. So that just about covers Ben's paycheck. I don't think too many people will be signing Senor Lopez to $15M+ contracts anymore, but maybe they will. There's always another sucker around the corner.

Enough already! Just buy a frickin' tuxedo, maybe Bigsby & Kruthers is having a post-holiday sale.
This convo is so 2000 and even then it was so 1999.
