Well, overall I'm not surprised a crowd would enjoy the line. It conveys the idea of "I'm a badass" which crowds love to see themselves as being, if you think about it.

You're right that the negative attribution of female qualities to any person should be criticized by feminists, women, or perhaps even gay men. I don't know that most gay men, however, would be offended because being called "girly" is simply not going to feel too insulting to a gay guy (as compared to a straight guy being called that) no matter what the motive.

I consider myself a feminist but am not bothered too much by the phrase because I think a grown-up man (or woman) charged with the responsibility of doing something important (like passing a law) should not act like a child (either a little girl or little boy) in carrying out their job. I equate "girly" essentially with "childish". Granted, Arnold could use a phrase like "little boy" or "sissy boy". Still, it's a lot different than saying -- "You are a weak dem and you are acting like a woman". That would be offensive and is pretty much what Ann Coulter does in about a quarter of her columns, if you recall.

What other third-grade mentalities are going to become the common coin of modern political discourse? Cooties? I'm-rubber-you're-glue? No backsies?

My knowledge of the RNC is timeshifted a day late, thanks to TDS, so it was only last night that I learned about the (Mad as) Zell Miller/Chris Matthews interchange. (Boy, I can't wait to find out tonight how Bush did).

Screw McCain and Arnold. This is the man that GWB needs to take on the campaign trail. I'm sure Kerry will take Obama around, if GWB will take Zell.

Any reservations the campaign may have on safety can be resolved by chartering a separate plane containing no firearms or sharp objects of any kind, plus a container in the back for loads of raw meat.

This is just another bad move by his campaign. Kerry is so fixated on not being another Dukakis (i.e., not "fighting back") that he is going to keep the Swiftees' issue front and center in the debate. Shouldn't surprise anyone, the DEMS (with the exception of WJC) have been living in the past for the last 25 years.

MOOSIC, Pa. (Reuters) - President Bush opened his post-convention drive to the Nov. 2 election on Friday by arguing his economic policies are paying off with an increase of 144,000 U.S. jobs in August.

The jobs numbers, while below market forecasts of 150,000, were respectable enough to give the Republican president a lift, and he quickly noted the U.S. unemployment rate of 5.4 percent was a point below the rate last summer and below the average of the 1970s, the 1980s and 1990s.

Bush said at a campaign rally that "because we acted our economy is growing again" and said 1.7 million jobs have been created since August 2003 and more than 200,000 in the last two months.

Slightly below expectation, but a decent rebound from the July numbers. Summer is typically a slow time for hiring, and I predict better numbers will be released in October (i.e., the September numbers). August numbers will be modest.

On close reading of this article, you will note that the historians only say that there were no Soviet tanks in the province where Arnold lived. Nowhere do they say there weren't any in Austria, period. Arnold said he rode in his uncle's car to the Soviet Sector (1 of 4 in Austria at the time) and saw a tank. Austria ain't that big, folks. Plausible and at worst maybe he saw someone else's tank but was young and had a faulty memory.

As for the Socialism thing, the country may have been Socialist in effect if not in structure. Eastern Europe wasn't exactly a bastion of democracy at the time and Arnold is not exactly a political scientist. Hell, I think of France as Socialist that way now though structurally they aren't and they would bristle at the label...

I just tested out your theory by leaning over my BF provocatively, grabbing his head in my hands and giving him a long tongue kiss and then asked him, "You want to get some cooties?" It didn't seem to provoke a negative reaction (on the contrary, SCHWING). For some reason, he thinks the process of getting cooties might be enjoyable. Weird that.
