For the record

I side with Kissing Suzy Kolber (and Da Good, Da Bad, and DaMeco, but there's less on the visual aid department there and it's not as funny) on the Trent Green / Travis Johnson thing. I was there, I saw the hit that Trent Green tried to throw. At the knees, could have ended Travis Johnson's career, and he's actually damned lucky he didn't break his neck.

Granted, Johnson could have been more diplomatic about the whole thing, and I don't disagree with the taunting call, but I'm not quite sure he's what Olbermann is calling the worst person in the NFL for week 5.

The best person in the NFL for week 5, obviously, is Texans kicker Kris Brown. I've never seen a field goal from that far out. And then I saw two more. It was unbelievable. (We'll ignore the part about the Texans offense being so godawful that the kicker was forced to try three 50 plus yard field goals.)

I don't think it's as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be. He's a quarterback. He's not going to try to lay that guy out by leading with his shoulder into his chest. He doesn't know how to tackle or block, so he throws himself at your legs. I really don't think he was trying to be cheap.

I don't think he was necessarily trying to be cheap (and everyone's been pointing out that it was a perfectly legal block, though if Travis Johnson had tried to do the same thing to him, it would have been a 15 yard penalty and probably an ejection), but I do think that Travis Johnson had every reason to be PISSED at a conscious or unconscious Trent Green about it.

I imagine he's going to a PR bootcamp soon, though.

That said, I'm not liking at all having to watch players being carted off the field. This was the second home game in a row that the back board came out. Someone needs to start a remedial clinic about not leading with your head when you're tackling or blocking.

Why would it have been a 15 yard penalty on him?

For once, Chris Daly was right. Imagine this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Bl...Carolina_crash - into downtown.

Protection of Passer

"4. No defensive player who has an unrestricted path to the quarterback may hit him flagrantly in the area of the knee(s) or below when approaching in any direction."

Roughing the passer penalties are 15 yarders.

This caused a couple guys on that board to opine (they didn't use that word) that baseball players aren't really athletic the way b-ball players are.

I realized what he means. there are lots of chubby guys in the majors- mostly pitchers- but Cecil and Prince Fielder are not too athletic in the traditional sense, as examples.

but when you see some of the plays in the field it is pretty clear these guys can run and leap and are quite co-ordinated; that is, athletic.

But here's the thing: the average ball player, (and I mean the fit ones too, the Jeters etc,) does seem stouter, at least through the waist, than guys in other sports. I was watching the Tigers and really noticed Ordonez, Polanco, and most of the starting lineup had some junk in the trunk. Still, they can move and they're great fielders. Maybe the weight helps in the hitting?

Am i imagining this phenom?

*muggs clarification- it is coaches/dads talking about players, not to players.

Can I ask you a question?

Why would a child have an easier time with both baseball, football and basketball rather than soccer? I would assume that you would need a certain skill set for all three more so than soccer, or am I wrong?

To the extent I can decipher your post, you are wrong.

I'm wondering why Trent Green, already a concussion victim of some reknown, would still be doing it. Though, I suppose that maybe the concussion victim part probably plays a large role in his poor block thowing decisionmaking.

RT. there's something wrong with Flower's front page. it says he has made 4218 posts, but everyone knows that's inaccurate. Flower has made 1 post 4218 times. Can you fix that?
