some people like heart rate info and all that. It would drive me nuts to have something beeping at me. when I'm stuck using a hotel exercise machine the "targets" and "actual' and all that feedback are too distracting for me. Mostly I just run to fast songs.
The topic is like music though, everyone has their own way, and I can see why people like all the feedback.
I just like knowing what my resting heart rate* is so I know if I'm getting too stressed, or too caffinated, stuff like that.
*plus, my internet resting heart rate of 60 means I'm extremely fit, so i try to bring it up lots.

But if weight loss is the goal, and it has been determined that walking is the exercise, it is VITAL that calorie consumption be curbed. In an hour of casual walking one cannot hope to burn more than 400 calories. To lose one pound one must burn 3,500 more calories than one consumes.
A person would lose weight eating nothing but HoHos if he or she ate 3 HoHos and only 3 HoHos per day because he or she would be consuming about 900 calories and burning more than that (the amount depends of activity and size of the person). This is not a good way to lose weight, but just by way of example.
Eating "healthier" foods is a good first step, but you still need to be concerned with overall calories intake. Some people become vegetarians to lose weight, thinking that if they eat healthy food they will lose weight. But if they eat 3,000 calories per day (evven if it is granola, or tofu, or nuts, etc), and only burn 1,800, they will gain weight instead. They would be better served eating 1,800 calories that include meat and dessert (if the goal is weight loss).
Calories in, calories out should be the focus for weight loss. Figure out (you can do a google search for basal metabolic rate) how many calories you burn at rest to determine how many calories you can consume, factoring in your activity level, to lose the weight at the speed you desire.

Last night on the train, there was a thick woman next to me snarfling Doritos and a ginger ale.
It was a late train and I was hungry as well, so I broke out my Stonyfield Farms organic yogurt. She gave me SUCH a look of hate.
And she was much fatter than me, I am pleased to say.

Could you people get any more boring?
Second runner up for weakest effort in Halloween costume. Slovenly Mr. Rogers?
Last night, a 6' 4" Tigger showed up at my door. He was hot. But he had a kid with him, reducing the hotness.
and then the local skater dudes showed up as skater dudes. I handed out an entire 5 lb. Costco bag of candy (minus a couple of full size Reeses cups) and 5 additional bags of candy. They were coming in groups of 10 at one point.
Sadly, no pictures of the party in the Castro because there was no party in the Castro.

I'm wearing this dress today. With high boots with 3.5 inch heels. I am a towering inferno of Pucci:
It is bringing me out of the doldrums in which I've been of late.

Really? hmmm.
I knew about the gunshots from last year but I didn't realize that the whole thing got shut down.
My friends and I are thinking about taking Halloween on the road next year. We're pretty damned sure that last Saturday night's party can't be topped, especially while people (sort of) remember it, so the host is going to take off a year of throwing his massive house party.
We were chatting about where to go, and the options on the table were Vegas, New Orleans and San Francisco.
Any other awesome Halloween spots to consider? Note that this particular group goes all out for costumes and tends to get a little crazy. I used to go to Vegas every year with some Buffy folk for Halloween, and there's definitely a cool vibe, especially if we go to the fetish ball.

Hmmm, nice mental image.
Ahem. Maybe you can answer this question -- what has happened to hockey players? Mike Comrie is dating Hillary Duff? Hillary Duff? JFC! Whatever happened to dating hot underaged Russian tennis players, or Miss Legs Toronto?
Comrie should be with a Croatian Vogue model, doing lines of blow off of the breasts of strippers at Scores, not dating Hillary Duff. What's next, Sidney Crosby dating Hannah Montana?

Yeah. It was sad. They even shut down the Bart station there.
Last year.
This year.

Not LA. If you scale back and just want to do a driving trip, Dallas actually has a fun Halloween scene in Oak Lawn. Blows away the West Hollywood party, which doesn't allow for alcohol in the streets, so people cram into the limited number of bars, and the streets are filled with couples pushing strollers (with actual kids in them!) and such. Yawn. I could hook you up with some super fun Dallas people if you go that way...
That said, go to Vegas. Seems like it would have endless options for Halloween.

Join Slash, legendary Guns N' Roses guitarist and member of Velvet Revolver, as he signs copies of his long-awaited, never-before-told memoir. One of the world's greatest and most revered guitarists revels with raw-edged candor his life and times. As raucous and edgy as his music, Slash sets the record straight and tells the real story as only Slash can.
Memoirs? Wouldn't you need a memory first?

It wasn't just gunshots, but nine shootings of people. I went out briefly around my neighborhood (SOMA) last night, and it was a zoo. All the non-Castro clubs and bars were much more popular than past Halloweens as a result of the castro closure. And, as you know, San Franciscans love their Halloween and put a lot of effort into their costumes.

I like numbers, and they are a big motivator for me when working out. While I know that the calorie counts on machines are wrong, I also know that on a given machine, the wrongness is going to be consistent -- so if it says I burned 300 calories in 30 min on Monday, and 320 calories in 30 min on Tuesday, it means I worked out harder on Tuesday and that's progress, or whatever. If I get through the highest incline w/o taking the machine from resistance 5 to resistance 4, I'm progressing. And so on and so forth. Hell, some days I just like trying to keep the calories per minute number steady at 11 or whatever.
So, if all that is stupid in concrete terms, I don't care -- it keeps me motivated.
