is somehow doing any of the things you suggest it is.

Does such a simple correction necessarily imply that we are defending those countries' treatment of women generally, or think they are "gender-neutral"?

Why does it suggest a broader point or agenda? Why not just take it at face value.? Or, am I as usual keeping things too simple and failing to read between the lines?

Maybe I misread AG. Could be he was simply and casually supplying a factual correction. I read it as a snide "what a racist tool" reply to Hank's off-the-cuff joke. I am very jealous of my right to belittle Islamicists, and prefer not to see them cited as paragons of equal-rights virtue.

We're usually broken up by ethnicity (spics, micks, pollocks, grease-balls, frogs) when derided, or old fashioned terms like "papist" or "fish-eater" are used.
