I haven't had much time to read or post today, but in scanning thru what I missed I saw these items.
I agree with Hank. And with Slave, to a lesser extent -- he's right that they should've been busted for causing a disturbance in an airport or on a flight. I doubt that they were doing a practice run, but at the very least they were making a scene intended to disrupt a flight and make passengers very nervous.
Also, I hate babaganoush. On the other hand, my eggplant parmesan kicks ass.

Have we learned nothing about disasters from the dinosaurs? Where are we in the development of our meteor-preparedness plan?

People in Hawaii are working on that. I'm not kidding -- I went to a conference (read: Boondoggle) and there was a speaker on the subject of "killer asteroids."
Apparently, we are not putting enough money into his project.

Let me preempt Spanky and point out that all of these links (from the titles, at least) talk about projected rises in sea level -- not rises that have already happened.
That said, I'd be surprised if anyone, even the hardest-core GOP member, is actually questioning that the ice caps are melting. They are smaller than they used to be. Which means either that they've been melting, or someone has been chipping away at them (maybe they needed ice cubes for a really big party???)

And people think I don't add content.
What is the difference between an asteriod and a meteor? Because I'm pretty comfortable that in the 2D world, we are pretty close to eradicating asteroids with our tiny triangular space ships. That project has been in the works for at least 20 years.

I am extraordinarily skeptical about this. And I generally do believe that human influence is causing the planet to get warmer.

A meteor is hurtling toward earth, while the asteriod is floating innocently in space (and potentially biding its time until it can hurtle toward earth).

I believe they say that sea levels have been rising, but by small amounts compared to what they think is coming.

You are right to be skeptical. The hurricane connection is driven by pop science and really has no backing. But don't tell Al Gore.

Hmmmm.... Maybe the speech was on killer meteors. But I don't think so.

Well, sure -- if you read them. That's asking a bit much.

Hey, the frogs still can't get across the street without getting crushed. You really think 20 years is enough to figure out asteroids?

I think the science is a bit stronger than you suggest. They can extrapolate from the levels of certain chemicals in the ice. Of course, its never bulletproof.

See number 50, especially. , but there are several other studies on the list that are pretty interesting.
The NOAA guys tend to do reasonably good meterology.
