I have a major soft spot for Cheap Trick. Budokan rawks. The Blowjob Camels will almost certainly cover "Downed" on their next tour.
I also like this live album a lot:

(Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men, "Out in California")
Lots of good live Dead, of course, between boots and From the Vault/Dick's Pick releases.
Oh, and the recent Neko Case live album is great.

Give Wilco a try. Buy Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Even my parents like it, and they're in their late 50s.

My disdain for a nine minute Police song? I don't recall that.

The third and fourth guitars are the musical equivalent of the third nipple, imho.
As far as live albums go, these two are damn near without peer.

If I listened to what your mom recommended to me, you'd have a little half sister or brother born about a year ago.

Depends on who Tweedy fired most recently. Alt-country is sorta kinda the best genre to put them in, though lately they're more alt than country.
What about Jazz? There's an early 90s Joshua Redman live album that I think is awesome. Not to mention the DiMeola, Lucia, and McLaughlin Live in San Francisco album.

One of the more interesting live albums is Devo's "Devo Live: The Mongoloid Years." The CD features three sets. The first set is NY in 1977, and the band is tight and energetic, verging on greatness as they prepare to change pop music forever. The next set is Akron in 1976. They're decent enough here, but a little rough.
The final set is from Cleveland in 1975, where someone (as a joke?) hired them to open for Sun Ra at a promo event for a local radio station. They play a really rough version of Jocko Homo, and you can tell that the crowd really didn't appreciate it, showering the band with beer bottles, threats of violence, and one audience member going so far as to unplug the band. And you can really sympathize with the audience.
The stuff that is good is probably not good enough to recommend the CD to non-Devo fans, but the concept and song arrangement of th CD work well with the band's de-evolution theories. And the last song (the Cleveland show) is challenging to listen to all the way through, even for the first time. I usually just skip it all together; like Throbbing Gristle, I can appreciate the concept, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to it.

This kinda sorta reminds me. If you haven't checked out Son Volt's (Read: Farrar and his current batch of sidemen) latest, I would highly recommend.

After decades of waiting and thousands of posts of trash talk from both corners, the game is finally on (unless Coltrane chickens out). The dream match. The race of the century.
Coltrane v. Penske. For unqualified bragging rights. Head to head, mano a mano, tit a tit!!! (sts)
The race: the granddaddy of them all, the Marathon. 26.2 miles.
The place: the hallowed Boston Marathon.
The date: Patriot’s Day 2007.
The rules:
1. As coffee is for closers, so is Boston for qualifiers, and as such each of the racers can do whichever marathon(s) he or she so chooses to qualify. Qualifying times are only relevant for qualification for Boston 2007 purposes and trash talking, if necessary, warranted or required.
2. If both racers don't qualify by the deadline for qualification (which is to be pursuant to the Boston Athletic Associations’ rules) then the contest is a wash, sts.
3. In the event that one of the racers doesn't qualify then that non-qualifying person loses and must publicly genuflect to the other (qualifying) person on the board and acknowledge the other (qualifying) person as the winner and the unqualifiedly “Superior Runner”; provided however if one of the racers qualifies, but the other does not attempt to qualify due to injury, act of god, extreme pussification etc., that person shall be mocked for being a pussy in perpetuity (or until a head to head race proves otherwise), but the other person does not receive the title as "Superior Runner". Yet.
4. In the event that both racers qualify then the racer with the best official finishing time at Boston is the winner (and failure to start or dnfs= automatic loss as long as the other racer officially finishes) and the loser must publicly genuflect to the other on the board and acknowledge the winner as the unqualifiedly Superior Runner.
5. In the event that the racers tie at Boston there shall be an Overtime 100 meter dash to follow to determine the winner.
6. In addition to the above, the Loser shall also be obligated to buy the winner/Superior Runner drinks and dinner at a place to be determined and in a quality/price range somewhere between Penny's Noodles and Charlie Trotters (2 Chicago legends in deference to Coltrane).
May the best man or woman, atcmb, win.
Penske ("game on") Account

I know where hank is coming from -- I am still scarred from suffering through too many of the 20 minute drum solos that used to be de rigeur in average rock concert of my wasted youth.
On to appplying hank's standards of "live" and "rock concert" --
That being said, it is difficult, but not impossible, to capture the excitement and energy of a great rock show live. First, the shows themselves often (objectively speaking) suck. Secondly, the recording and the mix has to be perfect, or even a great show sounds muddy or bad.
I can no longer stand to listen to anything from "Frampton Comes Alive" because it was overplayed by 1979, but that is probably the best example of a great pure stadium rock show recorded perfectly. I used Cheap Trick at Budokan because it is the second best example, and, more importantly, I still can listen to Bun E. and the boys without breaking an arm trying to change the station too quickly when I hear the first notes of a Frampton song.
