Global Warming, My Ass!!
Al Gore is planning to go ahead with a speech tomorrow criticizing the Bush adminstration for not stopping global warming.
Only problem is the temperature tomorrow will be among the coldest in decades in parts of the Northeast...

So the State Department gives 250,000 as the number for Bosnia -- is that enough for you there?
And how many is the right number in Zaire, Liberia, Indonesia, or other locations?

You are barking up the wrong tree here. I supported Bosnisa and would support other places as well. We just need to prioritize them, that's all.

I think they both have blood on their hands. I was not a '41 supporter (voted for Clinton, though not proudly). Never a big fan of Powell the politician, but do respect him as a man.

Isn't the theory that global warming causes the melting of significant amounts of ice at the poles which changes the temperature/flow of major currents in the oceans which leads (temporarily at least) to temperatures in northern-ish temperate climates falling?
But, whatever makes your heart beat faster. The world won't get totally fucked up from global warming before I die, and I'm not having any children so I really don't give a flying fuck other than in theory.

Now support your numbers, guys. I just gave you the way folks get to 2 million, the biggest number I've seen. Most of those come from a war we were chearleaders for (Yeh! Get the Ayatollah!).
I think you'll get to a supportable number for the attrocities books of a very significant 100,000 -- certainly significant enough to justify intervention, but you're then going to have to look at where the intervention can/should have occurred, and discover the bulk of these attrocities were committed during the first Bush administration, either in the civil war in Kurdistan or in the slaughter of Shi'ites following our withdrawal. We, of course, are highly culpable in the slaughter of Shi'ites, since we encouraged the uprising.
And we didn't intervene in Kurdistan, in particular, because our leadership has viewed an independent Kurdistan as a destabilizing force, which is a crock of shit in my view. We are particularly nervous about Turkey having hostile powers on two sides.
So get those numbers together, boys.

I tried to do it the smart way before, but to no avail. Okay. Here I go, Neanderthal.
We don't care about all them foreigners getting killed. We weren't for Iraq war because of foreigners. We don't know about dead foreign guy numbers, and don't care; we look at the stock market numbers, that's all.
But I ain't running for stuff, other than secretary of the local kid's basketball league*. Howard Dean is running for something. Dean said Bosnia is okay, because there were people getting killed. He also says Iraq was not okay. But Iraq had X people getting killed.
I don't get the distinction.
Help me?
* and while I can. i suppose, direct how some of our young men are utilized in this postion, I have no discrecision in this regard outside my tiny burg. thus, Kurdistan is beyond my rhelm.

OK, see, now this is how SM was like AH, and different from SH. He was doing significant, material, direct, military messing around in areas outside of his own country.
(This stuff is happening during my lifetime, so I care.) (Sort of.)

Yes. Fringe is right.
Global warming causes the new ice age. That's what makes it harder to detect.

Yuk it up, smartass. The same GOP pols who are calling global warming "junk science" want creationism taught in schools.
I have respect for Republicans who are proud of their principles. It's the ones who cling to any shred of respect for their leaders that scare me.
Edited to be fairer to Aloha and angrier at Chinaski.

Enh. The total inability of any of you people to admit that there could possibly be a qualitative distinction between Bosnia and Iraq has gotten me to the point of hating this place again. Really, I was forced over here because the FB has degenerated into some sports bar or something. Maybe if I go over there and eat an eclair slowly it will bounce back to normal . . .

G^3, dear, your statistics are really nice and all but by saying "since the turn of the latest century" I was talking about since 2000 (or 2001, if you want to get technical about when the century started, though I don't know which one is technically correct come to think of it). Did you really think I was asking about the last 103 years?
|
I'm an historian by training. Periods of three years make no sense to me.
Since there was ongoing, organized civil strife in both Kurdistan and with the Shi'ites (both in the south and along the Iranian border), since at least one of his sons was an uncontrolled sadist, and since it was a state dominated by the military, there will be some significant numbers of people murdered by the state's hands in this period.
But the widespread mass murders that certainly can be laid at Hussein's feet belong to a different period.

Hank, you should know by now that when they start changing the subject and lashing out they can't defend their position. Shame on you.

There is obviously a difference, just not one that justifies Dean's position.

If I understand you right my response is that Hitler didn't pull the trigger or turn on the ovens either.
