b) fleshy is the grossest (though I did get to hear the BJC say "titty bar" the other day- now both guys ahve said it so I need new men, so why is nobody writing me?) and you have inadvertently coined an acronym used on a near daily basis by my friend and I. FJM. You have no idea the impact you have had on my life. Seriously.

What are some examples of simpifying? I have two daughters so I'd prefer that they not be simps. Of course, being a male, by definition I understand nothing about females so I'm always looking for any insight.

New avatar up for grabs

I was looking for a pic of Wes so as to elucidate on the nostrilyness of it all for those of you watching from home when I found this. The only thing missing is the sound file of a Bernard Peevo questionairre. Can someone with a shit avatar, like say Atticus, use this? It is SO appropriate for him. He IS James Lipton. If noobdy bites, I may have to supplant Maude which is sad bc tshe is my perfect avatar. Look at his mouth. Its like a live action character of its own. And he has an asian wife. It is so atticus.

Thank you. In honor of my enormous steel balls (and the fact that I just saw the most recent James bond movie as well as got sucked into a Bond Marathon over Thanksgiving) I hereby submit my Official Bond Movie Rankings.

[...]

1. Early Connery (7, 5, 1, 2)
2. Timothy Dalton (6, 3)
3. (Tie) George Lazenby (4) Early Moore (8, 17, 15)
5. Pierce Brosnan (13, 12, 11, 10)
6. Late Moore (20, 9, 14, 16)
7. Late Connery (18, 19)

There definitely appears to be a correlation between who is playing Bond and whether I liked the movie…or is it the other way around?
You must of been smacked in the head particularly hard during your mugging.* Dalton No. 2? Not a chance. And his two movies sucked worse than anything except Moonraker and Octopussy. Brosnan deserves to be second, early Moore third, Lazenby 4, late Connery fifth, then late Moore and then Dalton, maybe, if you really want to count him as a Bond.

Lazenby really did stink, but he had the advantage of being in what would have been the best Bond film but for him (mmmm, Diana Rigg, argggghhhh).

* Sorry about the mugging, man. That just sucks. Glad you're okay.

And I don't want the responsibility, renewed sense of purpose, or stretch marks.

  • vacations
  • lots of other stuff

Kids do need:
  • love
  • attention
  • books
  • to be pushed with regard to school work -- and if their school is insufficient, they need you to give them additional work
  • time to just play
  • sports or some other physical activity

Everyone thinks that children are so fucking fragile. They're not. You can't completely hide the world from them and you'll never be able to protect them from everything. Likewise, you can't expose them to everything under the sun that you wished you had been exposed to and weren't (or were).

...

We've turned into a country where parents run after their kids trying to keep them from getting dirty, eating dirt, getting bullied, seeing nudity, seeing violence, getting their feelings hurt, etc. Betty") and freak out if they fall down even though it's clear they haven't hurt themselves. ... They have to learn to interact with other fucking people. They have to learn how to play. They have to learn that if they try to be too daring, they'll get hurt. Leave them alone.

And if your kid shows any sign of being different than other kids, they get drugged. ....

Kids are tough and resilient. ...People are stupid.

Agreed within limits. You left out a couple things we often take for granted, like food and healthcare, that kids need. They also need some level of discipline, order and consistency in their lives, and they need friends.

And on things like extracurricular activities: they need creative stimulation of some sort, but frankly if we don't organize it for them by schlepping them all day they'll figure out how to do it themselves. Music and art come pretty naturally.

And on sports and physical activity: they will find it if we let them, and I trust by setting up this category you are not suggesting that schlepping them to baseball, soccer, hockey, etc. is one of their primary needs.

By the way, I think Ritalin is overused and misused 80+% of the time, but there are times when durgs like Ritalin fall into the basic healthcare department, and are really very important. There are kids for whom it does wonders. There are also kids who have been turned into zombies for the convenience of adults.

And I sure am glad not to be included in THAT group. Or in that group of people who take stuff on chat boards too seriously. Let's start our own club that doesn't include THOSE kind of people.

Why the third person descriptor? Can't you just write "my friends and I"? And I've also noticed you say "the GF," rather than "my GF." That seems impersonal to me -- perhaps this is the reason that Paigow has doubts about the durability of this relationship. (And it's different from "The Mr." or "The Oddman," for example, because those are nicknames. So then it's even different from "the Coltrane Friends," which just sounds sort of silly.)

Also, you don't do this, but it's sort of in the same vein -- I hate it when people say female when they mean woman. It strikes me as a rather reductive way to describe a person. For the same reason I don't like it when people say male when they mean man, but this is less much common. In fact, it my observation, it is usually men who use that construction. A woman will usually say man or woman, unless that woman is a police officer and is appearing at a press conference, in which case it is of course futile to hope for adherence to any meaningful standards of English usage.

Does this bug anybody else?

ETA -- Soup, I wrote this before I read your post so it wasn't a passive aggressive Friday flame.
