Boys and Cooking

On the other hand, a relative's son who had all kinds of male-oriented play preferences also decided he wanted a play kitchen for Christmas when he was 5 and his Dad quickly sent the signals that this was inappropriate.
Your relative is a bad bad Dad. You should have told him that women love men who cook for them. My 14 year old nephew discovered cooking (of a sort) last year. He bought himself a deep fry cooker (I think he decided he wanted to have french fries whenever he wanted) and is the family fry daddy. This year for Christmas he wants a french fry cutter that will make narrow fries.

It's fun to watch him cook (he's made doughnuts and batter fried foods, etc.) because he is very very precise in measuring and following the directions. He was my sous chef for Thanksgiving dinner.

If it is really that important to you, isn't there a back-up copy of the board somewhere that would have a copy of the post with the URL?

Time it will take Atticus to implement my suggestion: ~ 7 seconds
Time it will take someone to implement yours: More than that

How much Atticus must care in order to make it worth implementing my suggestion if, on the margin, his time is worth $60/hour*: ~10 cents

* Highly dubious, IMHO, but maybe there's somewhere else he'd rather be.

BTW, I what do you think of the version of "My Favorite Things" on TLB?

Well, duh! Of course I type them -- don't we all? I try not to force my societally imposed and reinforced gender bias attitudes on him, though. I didn't sit down and say, "Now honey, you're probably not going to like this becasue it's about a girl... but let's begin." Geez.

My personal experience has been that kids may as a whole gravitate toward some gender typed toys, but I have yet to see a kid I know well (and we have A LOT of kids in our families) attracted only to toys "appropriate" for their gender. My son loves trucks, wheels, etc.

But, he doesn't like blocks, he thinks cooking is a blast, and he will engage in some dress up play. On the other hand, a relative's son who had all kinds of male-oriented play preferences also decided he wanted a play kitchen for Christmas when he was 5 and his Dad quickly sent the signals that this was inappropriate.
Again, DUH! No one is saying all girls like ONLY pink frilly things and all boys like ONLY trucks and guns. I think the point is that there is some biological basis for toy preferences even before socialization can kick in. The gun example was a good one -- I had forgotten about that. Even before my elder boy knew the word "gun" he would call it a "shooter" and point his finger like a gun.

My son LOVES his kitchen. He likes to play restaurant and make the food, etc. But this could also be because his father is the cook in our household. In fact, once when my husband was on a business trip, and I went into the kitchen to make dinner, my son came in with a worried look on his face and said, "Um... Mommy? Do you know how to make stuff?"

HA!

Now you're suggesting that the Republican Women's Club Barbie has chops?

Sister, she's still a bimbo, just a bimbo with silver hair, a rich hubbie to cheat on, and some discrete surgical scars.

Sailor moon would take care of her. Hell, the Power Puffs could cream her. But she's probably about right for Ken.
1) No, goddamn it. You've got the wrong right-wing women. But she was way too pretty for me to call her Margaret Thatcher Barbie.

2) As an artist, I refuse to concede that truly crappy Japanese animation could beat Barbie. Old-school Warner Brothers, maybe.

Yes, it is. I suppose it's even funnier if you know him -- he might actually benefit from a dose of wussiness...

Haven't heard one more peep about being fat, though. In fact, now that it's cold most every day, he himself selects his "puffy coat" for school (and calls it that too.)

You all were overdoing that point. Because there is also a point that (i) the toy preferences (and book preferences) are very subtly reinforced in all kinds of way and (ii) the biological imperatives that seem to distinguish boys and girls don't completely correspond to our societal biases.

On the later point, I note that the board has repeated examples of boys being attracted to cooking, despite the society stereotypes. I consider this evidence (note, evidence, not proof) that to the extent cooking play is disproportionately female, that is caused by socialization not biology.

Yes, there's a fair bit inborn on these distinctions, but it ain't always what you think and there is plenty that is imposed on them.

I think "kissing ass" is a concept dependent on getting something in return. Think of it more as giving a kind word to the downtrodden during the holidays.

I would say that analogy is inapt given your established superiority. On the other hand, it is e/o we're talking about, and superiority is relative.
