Hmm. We're back to mid-morning again, and only have 250 posts until rollover. It's going to be a fast day, I guess.

Well, birthdays are merely symbolic of how another year's gone by and how little we've grown. No matter how desperate we are that someday a better self will emerge, with each flicker of the candles on the cake we know it's not to be. That for the rest of our sad, wretched, pathetic lives, this is who we are to the bitter end. Inevitably, irrevocably. Happy birthday? No such thing.

Word, fringey. (How am I doing on the hip-hop talk from 1993? Will you be sure to mention my correct, however passingly out-of-date, usage to our instructors?)

And now, my deep thought about afros:

I have been noticing that the big afro (like from the 70s) seems to be making a comeback. My deep thought is that only slender women should attempt this look. I think it's rather attractive and striking on a lithesome, well-dressed gal. However, if you're not one of those people, perhaps a different hairstyle would better suit.

ETA a missing word.

That's the problem. I recently played hooky for several weeks, and it was all too fleeting. Re-entry has been a bear.

If it's too long, it may induce a gag reflex.

I'm just saying.

I look on birthdays as merely another step on the unceasing march to certain death and eternal nothingness. Could be worse.

Yes, it's always painful to be reminded of what life is like outside in The World. That's why I take the minimum amount of vacation possible. And I agree with Bilmore - life isn't fleeting. It just drags on and on, one goddamn thing after another. I thought I was doing everything right in my 20s to ensure I'd be dead by 30, but apparently I wasn't diligent enough.

Speaking of which, most of us are missing our only chance during our lifetimes* to see Venus pass between the Earth and the Sun. I can never get excited about this stuff, but this is a pretty cool photo:

* Unless someone here is going to be alive in 122 years, "during our lifetimes" is redundant** but in keeping with the gloom going on around here. Insert Rule Against Perpetuities joke here.

** eta: I see that this is wrong, and that Venus will perform this little trick for all of us again in eight years. Sorry to depress everyone.

I wouldn't have guessed that Venus looks just like some guy wearing a hat.

This is true.

Have you ever considered that each year, maybe today-right now, we each celebrate the anniversary of our death? Unknown day, but surely one that would cause even more pointed reflection into the year's goals, accomplishments and failures.
