Thanks. And now this is stuck in my head. Hope to return the favor.
Walk but you'll never get away
No, you'll never get away from the burnin' a-heartache
I walked to Apollo by the bay
Everywhere I go though, Eli's a-comin' (she walked but she never got away)
Eli's a-comin' (she walked but she never got away)
Eli's a-comin' and he's comin' to git ya (she walked but... she walked
but...)
Get down on your knees (she walked but she never got away)
Eli's comin', hide your heart, girl
Eli's comin', hide your heart, girl
Girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide
Girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide
Girl, Eli's a-comin', you better hide
Girl, Eli's comin', hide your heart, girl (hide it)
You better, better hide your heart
Eli's comin', better walk

Bugger. I knew it, but my name was in the mid 300s when born to being a top 100 name now. How many more Adrians can there be?

No, I don't have that tune. Boalt 94, indeed. You should have this:
Bulldog!_ Bulldog!
Bow, wow, wow
Eli Yale
Bulldog!_ Bulldog!
Bow, wow, wow
Our team can never fail
When the sons of Eli
Break through the line
That is the sign we hail
Bulldog!_ Bulldog!
Bow, wow, wow
Eli Yale!
tune available here

That's easy. Boys are carriers of the family name, and reputation, and traditional (i.e, recurring) names make them seem more likely to succeed. That's why boys' names are more stable. Girls are more like accessories. Pretty, trend-following names make them seem more attractive to successful men. Traditional names make them seem old. My grandmother's name was Mildred. That seems to heavy and depression-era to dump on a cute little pixie.

My two grannies were Mary and Betty. Betty.

Am I bad if I can't remember the name of one of my grannies? She was just Granny to me. And she died when I was quite young. The other one was Betty.

Just please, for the love of god, do not name your kid Holden, Taylor or. if a girl, Kaitlin (or whatever variable spellings one may come up with). Its all I ask and its the least you coud do for me.
I personally am into old school names. I like the uncommon as I bear an uncommon one as well (that has become in vogue unfortunately). I have great aunts named Edith, Beatrice and Teddy (her Ziegfield Follies showgirl stage name but i dig it). I also like Maude quite a bit. Maybe something in a Mavis?
And str8, may I suggest Ely over Evan? Evan sounds like the schlubby, skinny debate camp wuss who went to Yale and became a name dropper in Hollywood who tried to make a buck ripping off the fans.
|
If it was going to be Ely, I can assure you it would be Eli. But no, it's Evan, and the middle name will be Holden. (Or Holdem).
Oh, and I was re-reading mysteries of Pittsburgh last night; you remind me of Phlox in so many ways.
Kisses.

Edna and Alice. Both no. 13 at the time (in different years, of course).

But with propriety, society will say "Marie"

Nope. AoN, I have two grandmothers named Mary.* But then again, I'm Irish, so that's probably not that unusual.
I like the name Mary. If I had a daughter now, that would be one of the possibilities.
And an Aunt Mary on each side, too.

Apologies to any Zoes or Mackenzies.

My first name on my first fake id (procured in the Village in the mid eighties) was Mackenzie. I think I was trying to sound like an upper class wasp. Or maybe I was just a fan of One Day At a Time.

Holden is a timeless asshole name for a kid. For a goldren retriever, it works nicely.
I dread the day when Sebby announces the arrival of little Lord Holden Hunter Dangerfield.

Marion and Bernice. James and Emmett.
Don't expect any little Bernice or Emmett Slaves anytime soon.
My great grandparents names (can't remember one set) aren't any better - Ruth, Lessie & Lucille; Walter, Sidney and Alexander. Alexander isn't so bad, but I'd probably use the celtic form, Alisdair, and get my kid beaten up a lot.
Now, the Mr. had one great grandmother named Henrietta. I always think of that name fondly, because of the hippo on TV.

I had a great uncle Ely. Brother of Mary and Edith amongst others. I like it, its kind of allmighty soonding. The "i" on the ending is kinda pansy. Be sure to put a smiley face where the dot would be.
Oh and my granddads were Benjamin and Maximillian. Ben was married to Betty and Max was married to Mary. A lot of alliterations in my family. I was gonna name my son Maximmillian which goes great with the middle name but I think its on the rise.

My other granny was Meta. That wouldn't happen. I could just hear the conversation now:
"No, not Meat-a. Meta. As in metazoan, or meta-whiff."
