In an effort to wean this board from the cooter - The RS 500 Greatest Albums

Well, the music geeks at Corporate Rock Central (aka Rolling Stone) have come out with their 500 greatest album list.

Feel free to discuss or ignore entirely. I'll start.

Just off the top of my head, I'm surprised that Sgt. Pepper's is at number one. It isn't even the best Beatles album. Revolver should take the #1 slot. I've never understood why Sgt. Pepper received the hype it does, other than that it was the Beatles response to Pet Sounds. It's a great album, but frankly there are better albums out there.

I'll have to look at the list in more detail later.

Confidential to Paigow: The Dead first shows up around 250 or so, and it's the live album. American Beauty is the first studio album to show up at around 258. I'm sure you have issues with this.

Edited to add link -- Sorry.
As to the list, it was way too top heavy on Beatles stuff. Sure, they were great, goundbreaking, etc., but only a few of their albums would hold up today as best ever material (I'd put Abbey Road, Let It Be and maybe The White Album up there). Seems like some recent (but not current) stuff took a hit because the assmunches at RS were only looking at stuff from the 60s. I think OK Computer should have been within the top 50 (will have to check the link as to where it came in, but if I recall, not that high). Also Pink Floyd (and apparently The Dead, though I wasn't looking for that) had some truly great, groundbreaking, ahead of their time stuff.

But I agree with paigs, these lists are generally worth what you paid for them (unless you in fact paid money for them, in which case they are worth less than you paid for them).

And spooky, I hope you'll go back to being the ragaholic I've become accustomed to after the holidays. Having a ragaholic around sort of made this place feel like I was dealing with my own family. Sort of homey. I'll miss that.

Edit - looking at the list, Pink Floyd did ok (better than it appeared flipping through the magazine b/c the top 50 were like 4 entries to a page - lotsa Beatles). I take issue with Radiohead and The Pretenders not making the top 100. Will not lose sleep over it however.

I'm not going to quibble. These flip-flop depending on:

1. Whether it is before or after Midnight.

2. Whether it is before or after you have been hitting the bong.

entirely foul falsities.

As for lax players, you should move to Baltimore. Truly remarkable--3 year olds walk around with lax sticks. Not that you're into three year olds or anything. But it says something about the area.

Well, fuck me with a pungee-stick. I change my avatar and tag line after certain posters were after me to do so at Halloween and this is what I get?

Suffice it to say, I will be back to my normal rageaholic self and Henry Rollins avatar after the holidays.

And don't worry, I'm told I only have for speeds, in no particular order:
1. Anger
2. Rage
3. The ever-popular anger/rage combo.
4. Refractory period.

So don't worry your head about it. That nice homey feeling will return soon enough.

You know, you spend a lot of time bitching about the bitching about the board, but your bitching leaves something to be desrired. Stick to the brownies, sister. Its what you know.

Baltimore and upstate New York, oh and Princeton NJ, the hot beds of lacrosse.

It's funny how you almost never meet a lacrosse player from Manhattan or LA.

Don't forget Long Island. CW Post always seems to field a powerful team of homegrown kids.

Wow. I own 118 of those albums. I haven't really glanced at rankings or merit, but I think that this could take us days.

I'm not a math major but given that her kid is already born and the best case scenario is you can't have one for about 9 months, I'm thinking that odds are, they would not be attending the same senior prom. Maybe BnB's kid can fail a grade or two. No offence.

I'm not a biology major but I'm pretty sure marriage is not a pre-req to kids. In the interests of science, I'll do some research and get back to you.

As does Hofstra.

Apropos of nothing, I suggest that volleyball players are to guys what lacrosse players are to the lay-dees. Uh, or so I hear.

So natural women enjoy getting beat? I'm unclear on the message here...
The DJ screwed up. He was supposed to be spinning "Its My Prerogative".

This list is so clearly cobbled together from other lists.

I love how many "greatest hits" albums made it from music RS people don't listen to -- Al Green, Hank Williams. Greatest hits? What in the world does that have to do with great albums.

Do some research for goodness sake.

Oh, and the inclusion of Nation of Millions at number 48. Caucasian, please.

Edited to add: this is my favorite entry:
422. The Best of the Girl Groups, Volumes 1 and 2 , Various Artists
