I also understand being a Pole looking for work in Germany is not a favored crossing status.
|
The point I was trying to make is that the Polish and German border is slowly being dismantled. It is getting easier and easier for Poles to enter Germany.
However, in the United States, people argue that the border has to be stronger because Mexico is so much poorer than the United States. But Poland and Mexico are roughly equal, and so are the United States and Germany. So why is it getting tougher and tougher to cross our border?

From a physicial standpoint the fence thing over part of it makes it tougher. Unless you are a supergood jumper or soemthing. Like Jordan. Or Superman.

No - But I support giving them obsolete weapons so money can be given to a group that is trying to overthrow a government that was trying to turn a central American country into another Cuba.
The Democrat congress in its infinite stupidity cut off funding for the contras and these men risked jail to help that country throw off the yoke of communism. The Contras were kept alive, Ortega was forced to have elections (which would not have happened without the Contras) and millions of Nicaraguans were saved from destitution and tyranny.
These guys did not gain anything personally from their actions. They may have broken the law but they stepped up when Congress betrayed our friends.

Hell, the primary reason the GOP has fallen so far from grace is BECAUSE its turned its back on the Contract and its architect.

Gingrich balanced the budget. Something Reagan was never able to get the Democrat Congress to do.

Is Affirmative action (or to be specific, quotas and preferences) an attempt to equalise opportunity or outcome? I would say outcome.

The real accommodation the Ds work for has nothing to do with race, it has to with seeking an accommodation for the Ds leaderships own dimwittedness and lack of any ideology or principle, and they seek to accomplish it by marginalising the intellects of the masses through a public education system staffed with incompetent union stooges. Sad.

You would be deeply and profoundly wrong.

P.S. Although I suppose it depends on which point along the scale you measure "outcomes."

Dissent. I am dealing with this on a daily basis. The left wing wants to equalise outcome, assuming making hiring decisions based solely on race effects outcome rather than opportunity.

So you are against the rule of law, and see nothing wrong with breaking the law when it suits your goals?

I live in a small upper middle class suburb. My burb merges into a lower middle class suburb for middle school and HS. My son is a b-ball player, and is friends with several young black kids from the LMC burb. A high percentage of these kids have a strong mom and no dad. The moms are not college educated- some do have decent jobs.
From taking them to tournaments there are a half dozen I know very well, and am doing like a big brother kind of thing. I asked an assistant principal if he could help me and these guys identify potential minority scholarships- this guy, a black man, wasn't aware of any. WTF. How can anyone move up, realistically, not theoretically?
One nice touch happened last November- one kid is carrying a 3.2 GPA- enough to get him (with AA) into U of M or MSU- not enough w/o AA. I've been telling him he is golden for getting into schools. The last November the great people of my state outlawed AA.
Worse, these guys have a mom with enough on the ball to get them across 8 Mile road and out of Detroit schools. I have the sense that a high percentage of the kids in Detroit schools don't even have that.
I just see tons of poorer kids, white or black, heading into the future with little chance not to fall much further behind. Maybe not, and of course many will be fine, but shit it can get depressing.

Ty -
Your side manipulates statistics to show inequality on the rise. The other side does the same to come to the opposite conclusion. What about your data makes it unassailable? I've read both the NYTimes and Journal for years on this issue and the best I can divine is it is a grey area.
You exemplify a lot of what makes it impossible for the Left to get its message across when you assume your "truth" is infallible. It's not. You have stats; Slave has stats. neither of you have any business saying inequality definitively is or is not on the rise.
Couch your comments as theory because that is what they are. I don't need to quote Twain on statistics to you, do I? I'm inclined to believe there has been a measured spike in the inquality between certain narrow groups in this country. But that does not warrant the general statement "Inequality is on the rise!" If you've read the Journal's perspective, you'd see that for other narrow groups, there has been a decrease in inequality.
Society is not monolithic, and its dumb to say "we are moving to a less equal society." There are so many fucking qualifiers to be applied. It is true that a sliver of hyper-wealthy people are doing better than ever. Its also true that certain traditionally upper class professions, such as lawyer and doctor, are shrinking down to a more average middle class level, while others, such as mortgage and real estate brokers have risen.
I'm the king of the broad brush statement, and even for me, this "inequality rising" thing sounds like someone trying to describe the workings of supercomputer in ten words or less.
Stop it,
SD
