And to continue on with slice-of-life stuff, two days ago my friend and I were in Hermes and witnessed the purchase of a $9,500 ostrich Birkin. The stuff of urban legend, I am told.

They tried to charge her $10,000 but she said in a loud voice that the negotiated price was $9,500. Way to negotiate a bargain for your Birkin, lady. Excelsior to you.
Indeed. Any indication how long she was on the waiting list?

Incidentally, I am finding it impressively difficult to locate good jelly Birkins (meaning ones that actually more-or-less look like Birkins, except for being brightly colored rubber) for my mothers day gift buying blitz. Kudos to K&E's TM department, you are doing your jobs.

BR(must wander over to China Town sometime soon, I guess)C

I can buy a whole ostrich for, like, $400.

My hamster didn't "whine" either. Whenever he appeared annoyed or otherwise discontent, he made this squeaking noise that resembled a high-pitched cluck, not unlike that of a chicken.

Scuttlebut and Cotton Wooly were very content hamsters who never gave me an once of headache except for the fact that they both had the uncanny ability to up and die in the middle of winter making the hamster funeral and burial in the backyard a bery miserable experience.
Yeah, you can't flush them down the toilet. My hamster was placed inside a hermetically-sealed jar when he was buried so that the stray animals wouldn't dig him up.

I fail to see what is exceptionally chic or stylish about the bag. Now I never saw one in person so maybe the handscraftsmanship is outta sight. can people really just be buying it bc of the SATC/hard to get thing? bc if so, that is the most nouveau riched thing I ever heard of. The only people who would buy it for those reasons are those that just started banging donald trump or something. bc otherwise, it is such a lemming move, and how 2001!

What did you feed your snakes? I had some friends who kept a stash of frozen baby gerbils in their freezer for this purpose.

You mean, what did we intentionally feed them?

'Cuz, that's a smaller list.

(Goldfish, frogs, and mice.)

Why spend that much? It tastes just like chicken.

It's basically a really expensive, really well made tote bag. I understand they are actually a bit of a pain to use on an everyday basis because you have to go through such a huge unstrapping thing to open them up - hence all the pictures of celebs carrying them with the lock straps flapping open all the time. But, yeah, I understand the craftsmanship is pretty excellent. You do see them in person and think "that's a really well put together bag," which you don't with the knock-offs. (A couple partners here have them - it is amusing to watch one of them take 5 minutes to unlock and unstrap and open the thing to pay in the lunch line.)

I think the SATC thing was, as it usually was, the marker that the trend had run its course. SATC never really started anything. The waiting list had been around a year long for a long time before SATC picked it up. Dunno what kicked off the craze in the late '90s in the first place, though - probably just part of the whole "it's cool and understated to rediscover your grandmother's brands that are still really, really expensive for no fathomable reason." I think Lambertson Truex bags are a more-current incarnation of this.

You have to be completely out of your fucking mind to pay $9,500 for a bag. I guess there are just a bunch of people out of their mind.

I'm not for telling rich people what to do with their money, but when people are needlessly starving to death (to use just one example of something in the world that might be alleviated with money), the purchase of an over-the-top overpriced bag just inspires nausea.
