I survived: a holiday family saga

That was Thanksgiving with my in-laws. I'm pretty lucky.
My only complaint is that last year, they toasted me and expressed gratitude that I came into their lives. This year, the toast was simply to the baby. As if the baby just magically came into the world with no effort on my part.
My moment in the sun was so brief. Now I am but an afterthought. {Sigh.}

No, it's much much more than that. "Rent" is the soundtrack for my entire fucking life. When I hear "No Day But Today" it takes me back to my Bar Mitzvah. When I hear "Five Hundred Twenty Five Thousand," it's working on the final issue of "Rumpus" senior year. Or "Tango Maureen" -- taking dance lessons to prepare for my wedding. "Rent" inspires me, as it has countless others, and you and Carina Chocano can just go pound sand.

Probably the same deal with Tracy Chapman. I am (now at least) Upper Middle Class white and love her but not one of my black friends listens to her. What do they like? R&B and rap, and new/funky stuff.

If I may ask, how many blue collar workers do you actually know?

I was never squished in a room full of unshaven lesbians (NTTAWWT) day in, day out, Monday through Friday, throughout my entire teenagedom, with them obnoxiously shouting out song lyrics. Try having a pack of girls with bad breath shout in your face each day "Wendy strap your legs round my engine" as if that was the coolest lyric in the world, and then see if you're interested in going home and exploring B side Bruce songs after school. So, yes, I think association plays a part in whether you like an artist or not. See your own quote below. And, unlike you, Bruce spoke to nothing at all in my life; not ever. I'm reminded here of of The Smiths, "Burn down the disco, hang the blessed DJ, because the music that they constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life".
Association plays a part with you in terms of music. Great. And you're a Bruce fan who went down the shore during your childhood. Shocker.
No. The topic was rock and roll poets.
|
Got it. You don't like Bruce because girls you didn't like in high school liked him.
It's true. I'll always remember what was playing in the background. But honestly, my favorite Bruce albums came out long after I stopped going down the shore.
Fine. Bruce Springsteen is a rock n' roll poet, then.

Holy crap. You seriously think blue collar workers pine over the lyrics to Thunder Road. That is damn funny.

Fine with me. My only beef was that Seb's list of rock and roll poets excluded Jim Morrison. But....in my opinion, Bruce's poetry sucks.

Dissent. I was on the 15-yr old All-Star team that was 4 games from the LLWS. As a pitcher. Nasty curveball with great control. Just not enough pop behind my fastball.
For the record, I didn't pitch in a single game. I was a helluva pinch runner, though.

You have reading comprehension issues.
You said (and I quote) "I don't know a single blue collar worker who listens to Bruce."
I was genuinely curious how many blue collar workers you know. Because honestly, when I think about it, I don't know a one.

I found this funny. Thanks.
This may have something to do with my sinuses being packed full of disgusting gunk.

What does it matter? If Bruce is not generally popular among blue collar workers, what does it matter how many I personally know? But...if you must know, my family is blue collar, as is about 3/4 of my friends. Electricians, delivery people, car salesmen, mechanics.

They weren't blue collar? Where they hell are you from?
OTOH, maybe you are many years older than I am.
If you know no one blue collar, and you are not a Bruce fan (so you don't go to the concerts etc. etc.), how can you know that he has no blue-collar fans?

Excellent modernization of the tree-falls-in-the-forest question, fringey. If this law thing doesn't work out, a career in elementary school-teaching awaits you!

Just curious. Like I said, I couldn't think of a single blue collar worker I knew personally. Has nothing whatsoever to do with Bruce.
I'm just incredibly nosy.
