Top Baby Names

According the Social Security Administration, the most popular baby names in 2002 are:

"Emily has been the No. 1 name for girls since replacing Jessica in 1996. Madison and Hannah have been in the top 10 since 1997.

Jacob has been the most popular name for boys since 1999, when it ended Michael's impressive 35-year run in the top spot. "
This made me wonder how many Michaels and Christophers and Susans and Jennifers there are behind all of our unique monikers.

Looking back on my elementary school classes, it seems like there were always 3 Christophers, Susans, Michaels, Stevens (varied spelling) etc. which required the use of the last initial to differentiate.

r(hated my name as a kid, but never had to use an initial; hi MR!)p

P.S. E/O, thanks for fixing my code, I would have gone back and done it myself but (1) I know you like to do it and (2) I was likely to double post, like the filter-lighter that I am.

And yes, they have a problem with remote linking, but they don't seem to mind if you do it for short periods of time.

Is it me, or is everyone naming their kids after Dynasty? All that's missing from the list, it seems, is a Krystle.

[Edited to add:] Here's a link to the SSA's database of baby names. Unfortunately it goes back only 12 years (which I think is when people had to get an SSN for a child when born), but one can get the most popular names for each year, as well as look at the popularlity of a given name over the entire period.

Huh. Might vary by region. I once met a woman who just doesn't like meat --- except for bacon. So she's not a vegetarian in any sense of the word, she's just a picky eater. However, to avoid the stigma of being a thirtysomething picky eater, she tells people she's a vegetarian. Around here, nobody asks any questions --- they just do some kind of pasta dish, no tofu or beans. As a bonus, she gets props for her moral convictions re: animals or health or whatever people choose to project on vegetarianism, while she goes home and fries up some delicious bacon. Mmmmm, forbidden pork.

An elegant solution, it seems to me.

Bacon is a very compelling meat. The reason I am a vegetarian is because meat literally makes me sick. Anyway, since I went on the wagon meat-wise (for a number of years now), I have basically lost all urges to eat meat - it no longer appeals to me. Except for bacon. Sometimes I will have a bite or two. It's positively irresistable. mmmmmmm

Bacon is the dirty little secret of a vegetarian friend of mine, as well. Sometimes we eat it together.

Yipes! The real names of the entire new-kyu-lar Grinch family are dropping like stones in popularity. In another thirty years, we'll be the Selma and Abner of the neighborhood.

BTW, there were 186 boys named Joan last year. Wherever they are, they oughta find each other and form a club real quick.

I have a family member who doesn't like meat but loves bacon-related products like pancetta. I don't eat much meat (mostly eat seafood and dairy for protein) but my consistent weak point is Chinese spare ribs -- also porky and fatty. Any insights about why this is? I have no idea.

To each his own, I suppose. If I absolutely had to eat meat I really don't know what I would choose. It has been so long now that my doctor says I would have to ease back into it -- apparently I would not be able to digest meat properly at first so I guess that means you pretty much shit out the steak the way it came in. I know it would not be poultry. Definitely not seafood. I never liked bacon. I guess it would have to be a very good cut of steak burned to a fucking crisp and smothered in A-1. Just thinking about it makes my tummy hurt. Oh well, at least being a vegetarian keeps me from foolishly getting on shows like Fear Factor (I would do okay until the "eat this weird part of the animal" segment).

In bra and panties or just naked?

naked bacon.

which is kind of a cool name for a band.

which did exist:

www.nakedbacon.com

but does not anymore.

so it would still be a cool name for a band.

And I thought each of their parents thought they were being cute by naming the kid after a Spanish surrealistic painter.
