Thoughtful Judaism question-
Have the basic texts changed since Jesus' time? Like the Torah, or the Talmud or whatever- did they continue to be written or did they end ancient?
|
Probably a stp issue, but here's my oh-so-helpful response:
Torah -- uh, no. There have been no changes in the Torah (as such) - ever. Well, that's what the ultra-religious Jews believe anyway.
Talmud -- was written post-Jesus time. It is the writing down of the oral tradition that makes up one of the pillars of Jewish learning regarding "how to live a Jewish life" (vast oversimplification here, but I'm sure you understand... well, actually I'm not so sure, but that's about as much detail as you're going to get from me at this moment.)
The Mishnah is another one of those pillars, and is a study of the Talmud.
Very religious Jews don't really think much about Jesus -- it's just not a factor. I mean, it becomes a factor when one's non-belief in Jesus' [note: this and Moses' are the ONLY two exceptions to the "always add an "s" after the apostrophe to form the possessive" rule] deity/divinity results in one's being put in a concentration camp, but it's just not something that's discussed. Religious Jews study the bible, the Talmud, etc., and Jesus isn't really a factor (although I think the subject of Jesus might be treated briefly in the Talmud or the Mishnah -- but I can't say for sure -- any Yeshiva students out there?).

Movie recs
The Hollywood Foreign Press released their nominations for Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press, to put it charitably, is er, easily swayed, but they're the first major awards of the year and everyone gets all ga-ga when they come out.
I've been really bad about going to the theater in the last half of 2004, and I haven't really seen that many of the nominated movies.
Any recs on the following ten movies (nominated for best drama (first five) and best comedy or musical (second five))?
THE AVIATOR#
Forward Pass/Appian Way/IMF Prods.; Miramax Films
CLOSER
Columbia Pictures; Sony Pictures Releasing
FINDING NEVERLAND
Film Colony Productions; Miramax Films
HOTEL RWANDA#
Miracle Pictures/Seamus Prods.; United Artists Film Inc. i/a/w Lions Gate Films
through MGM Distribution Co.
KINSEY
Qwerty Films; Fox Searchlight Pictures
MILLION DOLLAR BABY#
Warner Bros. Pictures; Warner Bros. Pictures
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND*
Anonymous Content/This is that; Focus Features
THE INCREDIBLES**
Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation Studios; Buena Vista Pictures Marketing
Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA#
Really Useful Films; Warner Bros. Pictures
RAY
Anvil Films/Baldwin Entertainment; Universal Pictures/Bristol Bay Productions
SIDEWAYS***
Sideways Productions, Inc./Fox Searchlight Pictures
#These movies are either not yet released here or on limited release and will never show up in Houston. Netflix may be their only hope.
*I've seen it and think it may very well be the best movie I've seen in the last five years.
**I've seen it and have been mightily amused by the Ayn Rand discussions on political blogs that followed it's release.
***I'm planning on seeing this tonight, unless instructed otherwise.
One movie that I had been looking forward to, and I had assumed would be a repeat on the nomination lists, was Life Aquatic. Another Wes Anderson/Owen Wilson screenplay with Wes directing and starring Bill Murray seems like nomination gold to me.

Probably the most overrated and annoying movie of the last five years.

FWIW, one review I've heard on that movie was feh on it. Apparently, it's populated with the same quirky characters and odd set-piece storylines that play well in an independent film but just seem odd in a big-budget picture.
The money quote was something like, "When watching Wes Anderson's early work, I remember wondering what a director so clever under a modest budget would do when he had the resources available for a mainstream picture. The answer it appears, is that he does about the same thing, just bigger."
Nevertheless, I like Wes Anderson's stuff generally and plan to see it eventually.

"I'm hunting for little Mexican girls."
What is up with this?
Can we just have Kobe lobotomized? Was Vanessa Bryant born yesterday? Did Malone say something untoward to her that I missed? Does Kobe's decision to share all of this make you want to retch? Does Kobe make you want to retch?

More annoying than great. Some cool scenes and Carey, toned down, isn't so bad. But no way this movie even approaches "great."

Kirsten Dunst jumping around in her undies made up for the least annoying Jim Carey character I've seen.

Yes.
This is part 4 of the Inexplicable Implosion of the Lakers. Having managed to piss off and push away three Hall of Famers, Bryant is now apparently edging to the end of the plank himself.
Since [strikethrough]raping a young girl[/strikethrough] engaging in extramarital sex has already been taken, we're left wondering what Bryant's next step will be.
Rumors are that Nicholson has taken to wearing kevlar courtside.

What's your most embarassing Holiday Moment?
It can be any holiday. Who cares?
Mine would have to be when I was home from college one year and was meeting my friend out at some club for a New Year's party. I was there for awhile and he hadn't shown up yet. I got good and drunk and was dancing with some girl with a smokin' body who enjoyed rubbing it all over me. Midnight comes and still, my friend hasn't shown up. I've been hangin' out with this girl and we had a little kiss at midnight (light tongue -- didn't make out, really). She was drunk too (wouldn't she have to be?).
At about 12:30, my friend walks in and I'm talking to another of our friends and he comes over with the girl and says, "Guys, this is Sarah, my new girlfriend."

Our department's unofficial xmas party a few years ago. Our entire group had been under enormous stress and people were looking to cut loose. An older, but not unattractive atty started flirting with me very openly and embarrassingly. I had had a few and I figured the best way to handle the situation was just to kind of play along. This seemed to work until she started becoming more and more adventurous with her hands and my gf, who was also my date, happened to notice. My gf stomped across the floor loudly, prompting all conversation to cease, and announced that she was leaving. Fortunately, this happened right before most people in our office left for vacation, somewhat minimizing the gossip factor. But I still got a lot of probing "So, where did you end up spending the holidays?" sorts of questions.

I have to agree with RT here. I think it was the best movie I've seen in years. Maybe it's a gender thing?
The gender thing is on my mind b/c I was forced this weekend to watch a large portion of Masters and Commanders or whatever that crappy boat movie with Russell Crowe is called and I would have gladly drowned myself rather than watch the entire thing. I felt the same way about Braveheart. FWIW, however, I generally dislike "Chick Flicks" and have never seen a single Jennifer Lopez movie.
