Is Smith and Hawkins online? I have no idea whether their stuff is overpriced crap or not (hi, Burger!), but the one that was in front of my apartment building in Dallas seemed to contain gardening stuff. And wooden furniture that they dragged outside everyday, rain or shine, and which didn't seem to age all that well. Made me think they needed some advice on how to successfully market their stuff.

Overpriced and generally fairly useless stuff (I tried shopping for them at that very store!).

Where is Fugee when we need her?

ETA but thank you for the suggestion.

So he has ruined her fun? One of my friends from law school gave up pot because her husband (well, at the time she gave it up, he was her bf of fiance or such) got really paranoid on it and one time threw her out of his apartment because he thought she was a narc. Years pass and eventually they are divorcing for other reasons, when it comes out that the paranoid husband had been coming over to my house and (unbeknownst to me at the time) smoking pot on the balcony with my ex-. She was absolutely livid over this. Much madder than practically anything else that came out during the divorce process.

Maybe the pot smoking contributed to my ex-'s apparent inability or unwillingness to keep a job and pay his bills? hmm. something to think about.

Maybe she was a narc. Why does everyone always have to assume the worst about shiftless, mentally unstable people with drug problems?

I can spot a narc a mile away. Or in the next office, even. That's right. Right. Next. To. Me. I'm going over there and settle this now, once and for all.

Now that you mention paranoid, I think it makes him really paranoid.

I doubt she was ever all that into it.

OK, the Smith & Hawken site has something I want to get for someone else. So thank you, even more so.

Why life ends at 36. (PB Cross-Post!)

I was torn about which board to post this on, given that the quote is from conservative luminary John Derbyshire:
  • Did I buy, or browse, a copy of the November 17 GQ, in order to get a look at Jennifer Aniston's bristols? No, I didn't. While I have no doubt that Ms. Aniston is a paragon of charm, wit, and intelligence, she is also 36 years old. Even with the strenuous body-hardening exercise routines now compulsory for movie stars, at age 36 the forces of nature have won out over the view-worthiness of the unsupported female bust.

It is, in fact, a sad truth about human life that beyond our salad days, very few of us are interesting to look at in the buff. Added to that sadness is the very unfair truth that a woman's salad days are shorter than a man's — really, in this precise context, only from about 15 to 20. The Nautilus and the treadmill can add a half decade or so, but by 36 the bloom is definitely off the rose.

Poor, poor, dumbshit Republican. If there's a Mrs. Derbyshire, I give 50/50 odds that John won't see the morning.

I move we change the name of this thread (which has got to be the stupidest ever, and since the K race was won by a sock, should be null & void) to "On A Conference Call With GWNC"

Interesting. My 36 year-old tits are much nicer than they were at 15-20, when they were non-existent. ha. This man has a lot to learn and will certainly not be invited to any breasticle days featuring my tits.

Did it turn an ashy grey color? If so, that's what it's supposed to do when it's in the weather, unless someone paints it or constantly oils it down. I've lusted after that stuff for years, but I could never afford it. Even when I lived around the corner from one of their outlet stores. Smith and Haken is on-line at this site. Their stuff is really nice and really expensive. I have a few gardening tools from there, though I don't see my favorite on their website (a Japanese gardening knife). I did get one of these trellises for the front garden, but the damned clematis didn't grow.

These guys are my favorite garden supply people, and I highly recommend these containers if fringey's gift recipient is into growing tomatoes.

I get Plow and Hearth in the mail all the time, and their stuff looks good, but I"ve never ordered from them.

Jackson Perkins is my favorite mail-order nursery, and I think that their Garden Ease roses are a great deal. I bought nine of them last spring for my new rosebed, and they look great. I've advocated this gift before, but I really think it's a lovely way to give a dozen roses to someone. I didn't have as much luck with one of their packaged gardens in my own yard (see clematis, above).

The people over at Bluestone Perennials were really, really helpful in picking the right plants for the climate when I gave a garden to my best friend as a wedding/housewarming present.
